Improved mechanical resistance is part of today's quality requirements. One important criteria for assessing this feature is abrasion resistance. Depending on the nature and purpose of product, various testing methods are available.
There are testing methods related tot he "abrasion by friction" concept. Others are based on the projection of abrasive particles on to the test specimen. These techniques provide valuable information about materials and processes.
To meet industry's growing needs for research and control, Elcometer develops, manufactures and supplies a range of instruments designed for wear resistance tests. Standardised or conventional, these tests are widely used for numerous applications.

The Elcometer 1730 Car Wash Simulator is used to characterise the resistance of coatings against the action of automatic car washes. Meeting the exacting specifications of Peugeot-Citroën, the Elcometer 1730 is the ideal product for determining the resitance of automotive coatings to the abrasion caused by either the brush fibres or dirty water.

The Elcometer 1720 - Abrasion, Scrubbing and Washability Testers is robust and easy to use Abrasion Tester is extremely flexible and is designed to test the washability, brushability and abrasion resistance of a wide range of materials, including paint, laquers, inks, coatings and much much more. Unlike most washability testers, this unit is easy to set up and is available as either a 2 or 4 station model and can measure on flat or curved surfaces. Conforms to ISO, ASTM, DIN, EN, Renault / PSA

The Elcometer Taber® 5130 and 5150 Abrasion Testers is often referred to as the industry standard the Taber rotary abrasers are written in to many standards throughout the world in many different industries. A sample of the product is positioned onto a rotating table and the user's choice of abrading wheels then apply the unique 'tearing' or abrasion pattern. Conforms to ISO, ASTM, EN, DIN, NF, FEDERAL, FTMS, ISO/DIS, JIS, MILITARY, SAE, SIS, TAPPI

The Elcometer 1700 Falling Sand Tester is perhaps the simplest method of testing abrasion. Standardised sand (ottowa sand) is released and guided onto the test specimen. The volume of sand required to obtain total erosion of a known coating thickness indicates the abrasion resistance. Conforms to ASTM, DIN, NFJ, FTMS
