Why Measure Chloride Salts? Surface contamination with chlorides has been shown to lead to rapid blistering of organic coatings in immersion conditions. Many mechanisms have been raised to explain this, the basic proposal is due to osmosis. Chlorides are generally considered to have the most significant effect on the performance of coatings applied to metallic structures such as sea water tanks. Empirical research, sponsored by the National Ship Building Research Program (NSRP) and The Federal Highway Administration, indicates that surface chlorides can cause premature failure of various coatings.
