Gloss is measured by directing a constant power light beam at an angle to the test surface and monitoring the reflected light. Different surfaces require different reflective angles. Elcometer glossmeters cover the range necessary to measure any surface from high gloss to matt.

The Elcometer 400 Novocurve™, designed in conjunction with the British National Physics Laboratory (NPL), is perhaps the only glossmeter available with the capability to measure gloss on curved surfaces.

This is achieved through use of a small measurement area (2 x 2 mm) and a special optical configuration. The Elcometer 400 Novocurve™ is available only in 60° geometry, but has auto-ranging allowing it to measure gloss over the entire range from matt to mirror finish.

The small measurement area not only allows measurement of curved surfaces, but also also allows gloss measurement of small items, such as jewellery and pens, as well as awkward shapes.

The Elcometer 400 Novocurve™ is a bench top instrument, and parts to be measured are placed over the central aperture. A jigging facility allows repeatable measurements, and a footswitch is available for hands-free operation. Statistical analysis may be made at the touch of a button, and results may be downloaded to a PC via an RS232 interface.

One characteristic is that the Elcometer 400 Novocurve™ measures over an area approximately 3% of the size of that utilised by a standard gloss-meter, and so may measure local effects rather than having the "averaging" effect of a larger beam area.

This instrument is designed to store and average up to 199 readings, so it is possible to "average" a larger and selectable area and using a suitable sample population, it is possible to obtain representative results by statistical analysis.
