The Elcometer 408 Triple Angle Gloss and DOI Meter (part number J408-268) measures gloss, haze and distinctness of image (DOI) from a single reading, giving a fuller picture of how a finished surface looks. Two coatings can return identical gloss values yet look very different to the eye because of haze or an orange-peel texture, so measuring gloss alone can miss real differences in appearance quality; the 408 captures the additional parameters that explain those differences.

The instrument reads at three angles, 20, 60 and 85 degrees, for accuracy and resolution across high, medium and low gloss surfaces. Alongside gloss in gloss units it measures haze, log haze, peak reflectance (Rspec), DOI and reflected image quality (RIQ), where a perfect undistorted reflected image returns a value of 100 and lower values indicate increasing surface texture. The 20 degree range reaches 0 to 2,000 GU, the 60 degree range 0 to 1,000 GU and the 85 degree range 0 to 150 GU, at 0.1 GU resolution. Haze is measured in accordance with ASTM E430. Results are shown on a bright, illuminated colour screen, time and date stamped, and stored on board for up to 999 readings with full goniophotometric profiles. Bluetooth or USB download to ElcoMaster data management software allows instant analysis. The aluminium construction maintains optical stability, and the battery gives 17 hours or more of continuous use, recharging in 2.5 hours on the mains.
