The Elcometer 7061 MarSurf PS1 Roughness Tester (part number K7061M001) is a portable surface roughness gauge for measuring the range of roughness parameters required for compliance to international standards. It is now discontinued. In protective coating applications, surface roughness is expressed in terms such as Ra, Rz and Tp, which combine peak-to-valley profile measurement with an assessment of the frequency of peaks within the sample area. The right roughness affects coating adhesion and material usage, so it has to be measured rather than assumed, particularly where the sample is too large to bring to the laboratory.

The instrument uses the stylus method, supplied with an inductive skidded stylus pick-up with a 2µm diamond stylus tip and a measuring force of about 0.7 mN, with alternative pick-ups available for different applications. It reports 24 parameters with tolerance limits, including Ra, Rq, Rz, Rmax, Rp, Rpk, Rk, Rvk and others. The measuring range steps automatically between 350µm, 180µm and 90µm, with profile resolution of 32nm, 16nm or 8nm. Filtering follows DIN EN ISO 11562, DIN EN ISO 13565-1 and DIN EN ISO 3274.

The gauge can be used in virtually any position, horizontal, vertical or upside down, with a height adjustment accessory supplied as standard and an integrated calibration standard built into the casing so no external standard is needed. The display offers 14 languages. It stores up to 15 profiles and 20,000 results, runs on a Li-ion battery, connects via USB and MarConnect (RS232), measures 140mm x 50mm x 70mm and weighs 400g. It can be used in accordance with ISO 4287, ISO 4287/1, ASTM D4417, ASME B46, DIN 4768, EN 10049 and JIS B 0601. Supplied by BAMR, South Africa's authorised distributor.
