The Elcometer 3238 Long Edge Wet Film Combs measure the wet film thickness of a coating while it is still wet, using a stainless steel comb with teeth of various lengths along its edge.

Checking a film while it is wet lets an applicator confirm the correct amount has been applied before it dries, when the coat can still be adjusted. The comb is dipped perpendicular to and touching the substrate, held for a few seconds until the teeth wet, then removed. The wet film thickness lies between the biggest value wet tooth and the smallest value dry tooth. Each comb is wire eroded to an accuracy of plus or minus 5% of the marked value or plus or minus 3 microns, whichever is greater, and has 24 measurement stages for a more precise reading than shorter combs. Combs are supplied with metric or imperial measurements.

Three ranges are offered: 5 to 120 microns in 5 micron steps (part number K0003238M201), 25 to 600 microns in 25 micron steps (K0003238M202) and 50 to 1200 microns in 50 micron steps (K0003238M203), with a set of all three metric combs available under K0003238M204. Each comb measures 60 x 30 x 2mm and weighs 27g, with an optional certificate available.

The Elcometer 3238 can be used in accordance with ASTM D 4414-A, AS/NZS 1580.107.3, BS 3900-C5-7B, ISO 2808-1A, ISO 2808-7B, JIS K 5600-1-7, NF T30-125, US Navy PPI 63101-000 and US Navy NSI 009-32, the recognised wet film thickness standards.
