About this product

The Tramex Moisture Encounter MEX5 (part number MEX5) is a digital, dual-depth, non-destructive moisture and humidity meter for surveying moisture and humidity conditions in building structures. Moisture trapped in or behind building materials drives decay, mould and coating or flooring failure, so a single instrument that maps moisture, measures ambient humidity and reads surface temperature lets inspectors and restoration teams diagnose a problem and confirm drying without cutting into the fabric.

The Tramex Moisture Encounter MEX5 measures moisture content in wood and drywall and gives comparative readings in roofing, plaster, tile and masonry. Non-destructive readings cover 0 to 30% MC for wood and a 0 to 100 comparative scale for building materials, with a shallow signal to around 9mm and a deep signal to around 30mm so surface and core moisture can be compared. A built-in hygrometer reports ambient conditions and psychrometric values, relative humidity reads 0 to 99%, and an integrated infrared surface thermometer adds temperature measurement. With the optional Hygro-i2 probe, humidity accuracy is plus or minus 2% at 25 degrees C across 0 to 99% RH.

Optional external probes extend the Tramex Moisture Encounter MEX5 further: in-situ RH probes give equilibrium RH readings and pin probes give 6 to approximately 50% MC on wood and 0 to 8.5% MC on drywall, along with wood moisture equivalent readings. Results appear on a 58 x 35mm digital display. The ABS-bodied unit measures 180 x 85 x 40mm, weighs 290g and runs on two AA alkaline cells. The Tramex MEX5 is supplied by BAMR, South Africa's authorised distributor.

Frequently asked questions

Does the MEX5 damage materials when testing?

No, the MEX5 is a non-destructive moisture meter, so it surveys conditions without harming the surface or structure being tested.

What moisture ranges does the MEX5 measure in wood?

The MEX5 measures from 0 to 30% moisture content (MC) in wood using its non-destructive sensing mode. For pin-based measurement, it reads from approximately 6% to 50% MC.

Can I measure humidity with the MEX5?

Yes. The MEX5 measures relative humidity from 0 to 99%. For higher accuracy (±2% @ 25°C), the optional Hygro-i2 probe can be connected.

How deep into materials will the MEX5 penetrate?

The MEX5 has dual-depth sensing. The shallow signal penetrates up to 9mm, while the deep signal reaches up to 30mm into the material.

What power supply does the MEX5 use?

The MEX5 is powered by two AALR6 alkaline batteries, which are supplied with the meter. These batteries power the 58mm digital display and moisture sensing electronics.

Does the MEX5 work on building materials other than wood?

Yes. The MEX5 has a comparative scale (0 to 100) for non-destructive assessment of various building materials, and specific moisture content ranges for materials such as drywall (0 to 8.5% MC).
