About this product

The Elcometer 134A Chloride Ion Test Kit for Abrasives (E134-2) measures chloride contamination on abrasive media in the field, helping to identify contamination before it causes costly surface-related failures. Chlorides deposited on a surface by contaminated abrasives during blasting can make a coating fail prematurely, and contamination tends to build up where blast media is recycled several times, so testing the abrasive is an important check.

The Elcometer 134A Chloride Ion Test Kit uses a simple three-step process: pour the solution, apply it to the surface, and read the result through the titration tube. The Elcometer 134A Chloride Ion Test Kit measures from 1 to 60µg/cm² (1 to 60ppm) with a scale resolution of 1µg/cm² (1ppm), and each sample takes approximately 1.5 minutes. Four complete tests are included per kit.

The Elcometer 134A Chloride Ion Test Kit weighs 367g, measures 185 x 125 x 110mm and should be stored at temperatures not exceeding 25°C. Used by coating inspectors and blasting operators in surface preparation, marine and structural work, the Elcometer 134A Chloride Ion Test Kit is supplied by BAMR, South Africa's authorised distributor.

Test Method The Elcometer 134A is simple and convenient to use with its three-step process

1. Pour CHLOR*EXTRACT™ solution into the latex tube.

2. Peel the protective backing off the flange of the tube, pinch to tube to retain the CHLOR*EXTRACT™ and stick the flange to the surface to be tested and work the solution against the surface to extract the salts. Peel the flange off. Insert the glass titration tube into the solution in the tube and read the result.

Frequently asked questions

How do I test for chloride contamination in my abrasive?

The Elcometer 134A detects chlorides deposited on surfaces during blasting, with a single test taking approximately 1.5 minutes. Each kit provides 4 tests.

Why should I test for chlorides before blasting?

Chlorides deposited by contaminated abrasives during blasting can cause a coating to fail prematurely. Testing in the field identifies this contamination and helps prevent costly surface-related failures.

What measurement range and resolution does the E134-2 kit cover?

The kit measures chloride contamination from 1 to 60 micrograms per square centimetre (1 to 60ppm), with a scale resolution of 1 microgram per square centimetre (1ppm).

How should I store the Elcometer 134A kit?

Store the kit at temperatures not exceeding 25 degrees Celsius.

Is one kit enough to test multiple loads of abrasive?

Each kit contains 4 tests, so a single kit covers 4 separate samples before you need to order another kit.

How portable is the E134-2 for field use on a blasting site?

The kit weighs 367g and measures 185 x 125 x 110mm, and a single test takes approximately 1.5 minutes, making it practical to carry and use on site.
