The Elcometer 134S Chloride Detection Kit for Blast Cleaned Surfaces (E134-1) tests a blast cleaned surface for chloride salts before a coating is applied. Chloride salts left on the surface before the first coat can force the coating system off the substrate through corrosion or blistering long before its full design life is reached, so confirming that chloride has been removed before coating is essential to the durability of the system.
The test uses a latex sleeve filled with a Chlor*Rid extract solution. The sleeve is stuck to the test surface and the solution worked against it to extract the salts, then a titration tube is inserted and the result read directly from the scale. The Elcometer 134S Chloride Detection Kit measures chloride from 1 to 60 micrograms per square centimetre (1 to 60ppm) at a scale resolution of 1 microgram per square centimetre, and each kit provides five tests. The Elcometer 134S Chloride Detection Kit should be stored at temperatures not exceeding 25 degrees Celsius, weighs 250g and measures 185 by 125 by 110mm.
The Elcometer 134S Chloride Detection Kit can be used in accordance with ISO 8502-5 and SSPC Guide 15, the recognised methods for assessing soluble chloride contamination on prepared surfaces. The Elcometer 134S Chloride Detection Kit is used by coatings inspectors and blasting contractors in corrosion protection, marine and refinery work, and is supplied by BAMR, South Africa's authorised Elcometer distributor.
Elcometer 134S Chloride Detection Kit for Blast Cleaned Surfaces
The Elcometer 134S Chlor*Test for Blast Cleaned Surfaces allows the surface to be tested for chloride salts prior to application of a coating. Chloride salts left on the surface before the first coat is applied can result in the coating system being forced off the surface by corrosion or blistering before the full life of the coating has been reached.
- Test method A latex sleeve is filled with a Chlor*Rid extract solution and stuck to the test surface where the solution is worked against the surface to extract the salts. The titration tube is inserted and the results can be recorded.

Test Method The Elcometer 134S Chloride Detection Kit for Blast Cleaned Surfaces is simple and convenient to use with its three-step process
1. Pour CHLOR*EXTRACT™ solution into the latex tube.
2. Peel the protective backing off the flange of the tube, pinch to tube to retain the CHLOR*EXTRACT™ and stick the flange to the surface to be tested and work the solution against the surface to extract the salts.
3. Peel the flange off. Insert the glass titration tube into the solution in the tube and read the results.
Frequently asked questions
Why do chloride salts on blast-cleaned surfaces require testing?
Chloride salts on an uncoated surface cause the coating to fail prematurely through corrosion and blistering, shortening its service life. The Elcometer 134S detects these salts before coating application.
What is the measurement range of the Elcometer 134S?
The Elcometer 134S measures chloride concentrations from 1 to 60 µg/cm² (1 to 60 ppm) with a resolution of 1 µg/cm² (1 ppm). This allows precise quantification of salt deposits on your surface.
How many surface areas can I test with one kit?
Each kit provides materials for 5 tests. This allows you to check multiple locations on your surface or verify salt removal across different areas before coating application.
What storage conditions must be maintained for the test kit?
The Elcometer 134S kit must be stored at temperatures not exceeding 25°C to maintain test material integrity. Verify that storage conditions have been maintained before using the kit.
