The Elcometer 134S Chloride Detection Kit for Blast Cleaned Surfaces (E134-1) tests a blast cleaned surface for chloride salts before a coating is applied. Chloride salts left on the surface before the first coat can force the coating system off the substrate through corrosion or blistering long before its full design life is reached, so confirming that chloride has been removed before coating is essential to the durability of the system.

The test uses a latex sleeve filled with a Chlor*Rid extract solution. The sleeve is stuck to the test surface and the solution worked against it to extract the salts, then a titration tube is inserted and the result read directly from the scale. The Elcometer 134S Chloride Detection Kit measures chloride from 1 to 60 micrograms per square centimetre (1 to 60ppm) at a scale resolution of 1 microgram per square centimetre, and each kit provides five tests. The Elcometer 134S Chloride Detection Kit should be stored at temperatures not exceeding 25 degrees Celsius, weighs 250g and measures 185 by 125 by 110mm.

The Elcometer 134S Chloride Detection Kit can be used in accordance with ISO 8502-5 and SSPC Guide 15, the recognised methods for assessing soluble chloride contamination on prepared surfaces.
