The Elcometer 142 ISO 8502-3 Dust Tape Test Kit (E142-1 / E142-KIT) assesses the quantity and size of dust particles on surfaces prepared for painting. Dust left on a blast cleaned surface reduces coating adhesion, which leads to premature coating failure and a sub-standard finish, so checking for dust before coating confirms the surface is clean enough to paint.

Used together with the Elcometer 145 Dust Tape Roller, the Elcometer 142 ISO 8502-3 Dust Tape Test Kit applies adhesive tape made to ISO 8502-3 specification, lifts the dust onto the tape and assesses it against a comparator display board. Dust quantity and particle size are classified using a chart with dust classes ranging from 0 to 5, each with a description for accurate placement, and the integral microscope with 10x magnifier and graticule allows particle size to be judged. The test can be run as a simple pass or fail, or the taped sample can be retained as a permanent record of the presence of dust.

Two versions of the Elcometer 142 ISO 8502-3 Dust Tape Test Kit are available. The E142-1 measures 210 by 297mm and weighs 250g; the E142-KIT adds a cutting knife and a carry case, measures 346 by 292 by 84mm and weighs 1.4kg. The Elcometer 142 ISO 8502-3 Dust Tape Test Kit can be used in accordance with AS3894.6-C, IMO MSC.215 (82), IMO MSC.244 (83), ISO 8502-3 and US Navy PPI 63101-000, the recognised methods for assessing dust on prepared surfaces.
