The Elcometer 145 Dust Tape Roller (E145-1) is a hand tool that applies a controlled, constant pressure to dust-test tape, used in conjunction with the Elcometer 142 Dust Tape Test kit to assess the quantity and size of dust particles left on surfaces prepared for painting.

Dust remaining on a blast-cleaned or otherwise prepared substrate prevents coatings from bonding properly, leading to early adhesion failure. To make the test repeatable, the standard requires the assessment tape to be pressed down with a defined force rather than by hand. The Elcometer 145 Dust Tape Roller supplies that force through a spring mechanism that exerts a load of 39.2 to 49.0 N when fully depressed, so every operator obtains the same contact pressure regardless of technique.

In use, a length of dust tape is laid on the surface and the Elcometer 145 Dust Tape Roller is moved back and forth over it so all four wheels run on the substrate. The lifted tape is then assessed against the Elcometer 142 reference pictures for dust quantity and particle size. The Elcometer 145 Dust Tape Roller measures 160 x 70 x 110mm and weighs 615g.

The Elcometer 145 Dust Tape Roller conforms to BS EN ISO 8502-3, the standard for assessing dust on steel surfaces prepared for painting, which means results can be reported against a recognised reference.
