
The Elcometer 1800 Densimeter, also known as a pycnometer, density cup or specific gravity cup, is a stainless steel precision cup for determining the specific gravity or density of paints and similar liquids. Coating density should remain constant from batch to batch, so measuring the weight per unit volume of a liquid at a given temperature is a straightforward way to check formulation consistency and catch a batch that is off specification.
The cup is a cylindrical container with a lid that has a hole to let excess liquid escape. In use, the empty cup and lid are weighed, the cup is filled with the liquid, the lid is fitted so that excess runs out, and the full cup is weighed; dividing the weight by the known cup volume gives the specific gravity. The range covers two volumes and two supply options: the Elcometer 1800/1 (K0001800M001) at 50cc and the Elcometer 1800/5 (K0001800M005) at 100cc, with the 1800/2 (K0001800M002) and 1800/6 (K0001800M006) supplied with a calibration certificate.
The density cup can be used in accordance with test methods including ASTM D1475, ASTM D891-B, ISO 2811-1 and JIS K 5600-2-4, the recognised methods for liquid coating density.
