The Elcometer 1500 Set of Cylindrical Mandrels on a stand (part number K0001500M002) is a mechanical test instrument for determining the elasticity, adhesion and cracking resistance of dry paint on flat specimens. When a coated component is formed or bent in service, a film that is too brittle or poorly adhered will crack and lift, so bend testing predicts how a coating will behave when the substrate is deformed and helps formulators and quality teams accept or reject a paint system.
The set consists of a mandrel support that also serves as a test stand. A coated metal sheet, up to 150mm long and 100mm wide, is bent manually and successively around mandrels of decreasing diameter until cracks appear in the film; the smallest mandrel a coating survives indicates its flexibility. This metric version (Elcometer 1500/2) supplies 13 cylindrical mandrels in diameters of 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, 13, 16, 20, 25 and 32mm. The assembly measures 178 x 138 x 145mm and weighs 3.3kg.
Testing can be carried out in accordance with AS/NZS 1580.402.1, ASTM D 2485, ASTM D 522-B, ASTM D 1737, BS EN3900-E1, DIN 53152, ISO 1519-1, JIS K 5600-5-1 and NF T30-040, the recognised bend-test methods for paint flexibility.
