About this product

The Elcometer 1620 Cupping Tester (K0001620M004) is a bench instrument for assessing the cupping ability of coatings applied to metal sheets up to 1.2mm thick.

The cupping test measures how far a coated panel can be deformed before the coating cracks, which indicates how the finish will behave when the part is pressed or formed. A coating that fails at a shallow cupping depth will not survive deep-drawn or stamped components. The Elcometer 1620 Cupping Tester uses a 27mm diameter hardened steel die in a clamping device with a 20mm diameter punch. A hand-rotated crank and reduction drive moves the punch progressively into the sample, and an integrated digital gauge reads the cupping depth directly.

The resulting fissures, cracks and tears in the coating, down to 10 micrometres, are viewed through the supplied x10 illuminated magnifying glass, so the point of failure can be observed and recorded accurately. The Elcometer 1620 Cupping Tester measures 300 x 240 x 500mm and weighs 24kg, with a calibration certificate available as an option for the Elcometer 1620 Cupping Tester.

The Elcometer 1620 Cupping Tester conforms to BS 3900 E4, DIN 53156, DIN 53232, ECCA T6, EN 13523-6, ISO 1520, JIS K 5600-5-2, NBN T22-104 and NF T30-019, so results can be reported against recognised methods. The Elcometer 1620 Cupping Tester is used in coatings testing across paint, coil-coating and sheet-metal manufacturing. Supplied by BAMR, South Africa's authorised distributor.

Frequently asked questions

What maximum sheet thickness can the Elcometer 1620 test?

The 1620 is designed to assess the cupping ability of coatings applied to metal sheets up to 1.2mm thick, making it suitable for most standard industrial applications.

Is the 1620 manual or automatic?

It is a manual cupping tester with a digital gauge. The digital display shows results in millimetres, giving you precise control and direct readouts of your measurements.

What materials can you test with the 1620?

The 1620 works on metal sheet substrates, measuring how applied coatings respond to cupping stress on these surfaces.

What does the digital gauge display?

The digital gauge displays coating deformation in millimetres (mm). Results show the exact degree of cupping resistance, helping you assess coating quality.

How portable is the 1620?

At 24kg with dimensions of 300 x 240 x 500mm, the 1620 is compact enough for workshop and laboratory benches that can support a stable testing surface.
