The Elcometer 3545 Adjustable Bird Film Applicators are user-adjustable stainless steel applicators for drawing down a coating of chosen thickness and width onto a flat substrate. Unlike fixed-gap applicators, the gap on the 3545 is set by the operator, which solves a specific problem in coatings work: producing a controlled wedge-shaped film for tests where coverage or behaviour needs to be assessed across a continuous range of thicknesses on a single panel.

The applicator carries a gap size scale at each end. Setting both ends to the same value gives a film of uniform thickness, while choosing different settings at each end lays down a wedge that varies smoothly along its length. The tools are manufactured to the same high standards as the Elcometer 3540 and 3550 Bird Film Applicators and are available in a number of film widths. To calculate the total width of the applicator, add 40mm to the film width.

The Elcometer 3545 can be used manually or fitted to the Elcometer 4340 Motorised Film Applicator for more repeatable draw-downs. It can be used in accordance with ASTM D 823-E, a recognised method for producing films of coating material for testing. A Certificate of Calibration is available, issued for fixed calibration equipment to show readings and traceability.
