About this product

The Elcometer NDT CG70BDL Corrosion Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge (part number CG70BDL) is a handheld ultrasonic corrosion thickness gauge with a large display and B-Scan capability for inspecting pipes, tanks and metal structures. Internal corrosion thins a wall from a surface that cannot be seen, and an undetected thin section can fail in service. The CG70BDL measures remaining wall thickness and presents a 2D cross sectional block view, so inspectors can identify pits and corroded areas rather than relying on a single numeric reading.

Measurement uses Pulse-Echo (PE) and Echo-Echo (EE) ThruPaint technology, where Echo-Echo ignores an applied coating to return true material thickness. The PE range of the Elcometer NDT CG70BDL Corrosion Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge is 0.63 to 254mm and the EE range is 1.27 to 102mm, with ±0.01mm accuracy, 0.01mm resolution and a velocity calibration range of 1250 to 9,999m/s. A dual element transducer (1 to 10MHz) is driven by a square wave pulser, and the 1/8 inch VGA greyscale display (62 x 45.7mm viewable area) shows digits, the B-Scan and a scan bar. High speed scan mode runs at 32 readings per second, with the B-Scan refreshing at 15 seconds per screen.

Gain in PE mode is selectable low, medium or high, while Echo-Echo uses automatic gain control to adjust the received echo amplitude for difficult materials. The Elcometer NDT CG70BDL Corrosion Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge holds 6 factory and 64 user-definable setups transferable to and from a PC archive, and the data logger stores 12,000 readings with waveforms using sequential and grid logging, alphanumeric batch identification and an OBSTRUCT marker for inaccessible points, output over bi-directional RS232 to the Elcometer NDT data management software. Unlike the CG70ABDL, the Elcometer NDT CG70BDL Corrosion Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge does not include the A-Scan display. It is supplied by BAMR, South Africa's authorised distributor.

Frequently asked questions

Can the CG70BDL measure coating thickness without stripping paint?

Yes. The EE (ThruPaint™) mode measures through paint and coatings from 1.27-102mm. PE mode provides direct contact measurement on bare steel up to 254mm, ideal for thicker sections or uncoated substrates.

What's the difference between PE and EE modes, and when do I use each?

PE mode measures bare material directly; EE mode measures through coatings. Choose EE for painted or coated surfaces; PE for direct measurement on uncoated steel where greater depth range is needed.

How many readings can the gauge store, and can I organise them by location or project?

The gauge logs up to 12,000 readings with full waveforms. Sequential and grid logging modes support batch campaigns, and alpha-numeric batch identification lets you tag inspections by site or client.

How accurate are the CG70BDL measurements?

Measurement accuracy is ±0.01mm with 0.01mm resolution. Automatic V-path and dual-path error correction, plus a built-in repeatability indicator, help verify reading confidence on variable surfaces.

Will the CG70BDL work on-site in cold or wet conditions?

Yes. Operating temperature range is -10 to 60°C, and the aluminium case has gasket-sealed end caps with a waterproof membrane keypad. Approximate battery life is 200 hours for extended field campaigns.

How do I calibrate for different materials, and can I export data to a computer?

The gauge offers 6 factory and 64 user-definable calibration setups for different materials and velocities. RS232 bi-directional interface allows measurement data and waveforms to transfer to external systems for analysis.
