The Dakota BT2-DL Benchtop Bolt Tension Monitor (part number Z-197-0001), also known as the Max II, is an ultrasonic gauge that measures the elongation, and therefore the load, produced when a threaded fastener is tightened. It builds on the earlier BT1-DL with added speed, hardware and length capacity, measuring fasteners up to 100 feet long. Because the measurement is based on ultrasound rather than applied torque, it is not influenced by friction or thread resistance, which makes it a more reliable way to confirm that each bolt carries the intended clamp load.
The Dakota BT Benchtop Bolt Tension Monitor sends an ultrasonic pulse along the bolt and tracks the change in transit time as the fastener stretches. It covers a measurement range from 25.4mm to 25,400mm in pulse-echo mode with a resolution of +/- 0.0001mm, and a velocity calibration range of 1250 to 13,995m/s. Detections are reported as time in nanoseconds, elongation in millimetres, load, stress and percentage strain. An Auto Set function automates detection, scope and display setup for each individual bolt, and temperature compensation corrects for thermal effects on the reading.
Readings are shown on a sunlight-readable QVGA colour TFT display and stored in 4GB of internal memory with sequential and grid batching. The glue-on option suits short bolts with minimal elongation to remove transducer placement errors. Factory calibration is traceable to NIST and MIL-STD-45662A. Supplied by BAMR, South Africa's authorised distributor.
Dakota BT Benchtop Bolt Tension Monitor

Frequently asked questions
How long can the Dakota BT2 measure in a bolt or fastener?
The Dakota BT2 measures up to 100 feet in length, with a measurement range of 25.4 to 25,400mm and resolution of +/- 0.0001mm. This covers most practical bolting applications.
Can I calibrate the Dakota BT2 in the field without returning it to the workshop?
Yes. The Dakota BT2 supports field calibration using Vector or Regression correction curves, with calibration data tied to Load and Stress measurements for increased accuracy.
What transducer connector types are compatible with the Dakota BT2?
The Dakota BT2 accepts Microdot, Lemo, and BNC connectors. This flexibility allows you to use existing probes or source specific connectors for your setup.
What measurements can the Dakota BT2 provide beyond bolt length?
The Dakota BT2 measures elongation (change in length), load (force applied in pounds, KIP, or MPa), stress (force per unit area), and percentage strain, giving a complete picture of bolt behaviour under tension.
Is the Dakota BT2 display usable in sunlight or bright factory conditions?
Yes. The Dakota BT2 features a Blanview sunlight-readable QVGA TFT colour display (320 x 240 pixels), so you can read measurements clearly even in bright ambient light.
