About this product

The Dakota range of Dual Element Transducers ultrasonically measures material thickness when only one side of the part under inspection can be reached. Single-sided access is common in corrosion monitoring of pipes, tanks and vessels, where the inside surface cannot be touched but remaining wall thickness still has to be confirmed.

Each dual element transducer houses two crystals in one case, separated by an acoustic barrier. One crystal transmits the sound pulse and the other receives it, which speeds up measurement, and the crystals are mounted at slight angles towards each other for better near-surface focusing. This construction makes twin-crystal probes well suited to inspecting metal substrates, though they also measure plastics, composites and fibreglass.

The Dakota Dual Element Transducer range spans frequencies from 1.00MHz to 10.00MHz and probe diameters from 3/16 inch to 1/2 inch, in standard, high-resolution, composite, armoured, low-profile, high-temperature and coating-thickness variants. Damping is identified by code: S for standard undamped, H for highly damped, and CT for damped coating-thickness transducers. Probes are offered in ThruPaint potted and Microdot or Lemo connector forms, with specific part numbers matched to Dakota gauge families including the CX, ZX, MX, CMX, R9, PR8-DL, FX70 and FX80. With over eighty part numbers covering different frequencies, sizes, connectors and characteristics, the correct probe can be matched to the application. Supplied by BAMR, South Africa's authorised Dakota distributor.

The Dakota range of Dual Element Transducers is designed to ultrasonically measure material thickness when access is only available to one side of the material under inspection. Dual element transducers are designed with two crystals in one case, separated by an acoustic barrier. One crystal transmits a signal and receives on another crystal, this improves signal measuring speeds. The crystals are mounted at slight angles towards each other. Enabling better near surface focusing. Twin Crystal transducers are ideal for inspecting metal substrates but can also measure thicknesses of other materials, such as plastic, composites or fibreglass.

    Frequently asked questions

Why should I use a dual element transducer instead of a single element probe?

Dual element transducers separate the transmit and receive crystals, one for each function. This design improves signal measurement speed and allows the crystals to be angled slightly towards each other for better near-surface focusing, giving you faster and more accurate readings on thin-walled components.

Can Dakota transducers measure through a coating or paint layer?

Yes. Select a ThruPaint model if you need to read through coatings, or choose a damped coating thickness version designed to account for the coating layer during measurement. The range includes options for both standard and through-paint applications.

What materials can these transducers measure?

Dakota transducers are ideal for metal substrates but also measure thickness on plastic, composites, and fibreglass. The dual element design and available frequency range (1.00 to 10.00 MHz) make them versatile across different material types.

What's the maximum temperature these transducers can handle?

Standard transducers operate up to 126°C. High temperature variants are available and rated to 335°C, allowing you to inspect hot surfaces or components in elevated-temperature environments.

Do I need a specific probe diameter or frequency for my application?

Dakota offers three probe diameters (1/2 inch, 1/4 inch, 3/16 inch) and six frequencies (1.00 to 10.00 MHz). Smaller probes suit confined or detailed areas; higher frequencies deliver finer resolution for thin materials. Contact us with your inspection requirements to confirm the right model.
