The Dakota PZX Precision Thickness Gauges (PZX-7) are ultrasonic precision thickness gauges with ThruPaint technology, available as the PZX1 (part number Z-307-0002) and the data-logging PZX1-DL (part number Z-308-0002). The Dakota PZX Precision Thickness Gauges measure the thickness of thin substrates accurately and can calibrate to a variety of materials using a one point calibration option.
On thin material, a small error is a large share of the wall thickness, so resolution and repeatability decide whether a part is in tolerance. ThruPaint technology lets the Dakota PZX Precision Thickness Gauge read the substrate thickness without removing a coating first, which saves stripping paint to take a measurement. Resolution is 0.01mm and the velocity calibration range runs from 309.88 to 18,542m/s, covering metals and composites. Measurement ranges of the Dakota PZX Precision Thickness Gauges include pulse-echo from 0.63 to 914.4mm, echo-echo on a single delay line from 0.152 to 25.4mm, and plastics from 0.127 to 6.35mm, with single element transducers from 5 to 20MHz.
Both models of the Dakota PZX Precision Thickness Gauges share High Speed Scan Mode, Differential Mode, a limit alarm, auto V-path correction and a repeatability and stability indicator, with 12.7mm high digits and a switchable LED backlight. The PZX1 has no data logging, while the PZX1-DL stores sequential data, 40 files of 250 readings each, for 10,000 readings. Factory calibration for the Dakota PZX Precision Thickness Gauges is traceable to NIST and to MIL-STD-45662A, the military standard for calibration system requirements.
Used in precision machining, stamping, aircraft, automotive and thin plastics applications. Supplied by BAMR, South Africa's authorised Dakota distributor.

Frequently asked questions
What's the difference between the PZX1 and PZX1-DL models?
The PZX1-DL includes sequential data logging with capacity for 40 files of 250 readings each (10,000 total), whilst the standard PZX1 does not store data. Both models offer identical measurement capabilities.
What battery options are available, and what's the expected runtime?
The gauge uses two AA batteries. Alkaline batteries provide approximately 35 hours of operation, whilst rechargeable Nicad batteries deliver approximately 18 hours per charge.
Can I calibrate the PZX1 to different materials?
Yes. The gauge offers one-point calibration to adjust for different materials. Velocity calibration spans 309.88 to 18,542 m/s to accommodate material variation.
What measurement ranges are available across different modes?
Ranges vary by mode. Plastic (PLAS): 0.127-6.35mm. Interface-Echo (IE): 1.524-25.4mm. PE: 0.63-914.4mm. EE single delay line: 0.152-25.4mm. EE single contact: 1-152.4mm. Resolution: 0.01mm across all modes.
What transducer type does the PZX1 use?
Both models use single-element transducers operating at a frequency range of 5 to 20MHz.
