Dakota Ultrasonic Couplant is a viscous gel used to transmit ultrasonic energy from a transducer into the material being tested during ultrasonic thickness and flaw measurement. Without a couplant, air between the probe and the surface blocks the sound signal, so the gel is what makes a reliable reading possible.
The gel is formulated to stay in place on both horizontal and vertical surfaces, so readings can be taken on pipework, tank walls and overhead sections without the couplant running off. Regular couplant covers a temperature range of -15 to 104 degrees C, and a high-temperature gel option extends to 398 degrees C for use with high-temperature transducers on hot surfaces.
The range is supplied in several formats to match the application and transducer. Standard couplant comes in 120 ml (V-000-0001), 360 ml (V-000-0003) and 4.5 L (V-000-0004) bottles, with a 120 ml low-viscosity version (V-000-0005) and the 60 ml high-temperature gel (V-000-0002). For underwater work there is a 6 g gasket lubricant (V-000-0007) and an O-ring kit of one lubricant and two gaskets (A-185-0001). Dakota Ultrasonic Couplant is used in ultrasonic NDT across corrosion monitoring, concrete and metal thickness testing, and industrial inspection.
Dakota Ultrasonic Couplant is supplied by BAMR, South Africa's authorised distributor.
Dakota Ultrasonic Couplant
The Dakota Ultrasonic Couplant is a viscous gel that has been designed to work on both horizontal and vertical surfaces.
- Works on both horizontal and vertical surfaces
- Regular couplant temperature range -15 to 104°C
- High temperature gel option Up to 398°C for use with high temperature transducers
- Available in multiple sizes 120ml, 360ml, 4.5L bottles
When to use Dakota Ultrasonic Couplant
Use Dakota Ultrasonic Couplant whenever you take ultrasonic thickness or flaw readings and need clean sound transfer between the transducer and the surface. The viscous gel holds on both horizontal and vertical surfaces, so it stays in place on pipework and walls, and a high temperature option extends its use to hot components.
- 1Holds on vertical surfacesThe viscous gel stays put on both horizontal and vertical surfaces, so readings on pipes and walls are not lost to couplant running off the contact point.
- 2High temperature gel optionA high temperature gel rated up to 398C lets you couple to hot surfaces with high temperature transducers instead of waiting for the component to cool down.
- 3Sized for the jobIt comes in 120ml, 360ml and 4.5L sizes, covering quick spot checks through to large inspection campaigns. The regular gel runs from -15 to 104C.

Frequently asked questions
What is the Dakota Ultrasonic Couplant and why is it needed?
It is a viscous gel applied between the transducer and the test surface to transmit ultrasonic signals. The gel is designed to maintain contact on both horizontal and vertical surfaces during thickness measurement.
Which Dakota gauges is the standard 120ml couplant (V-000-0001) compatible with?
V-000-0001 is listed as compatible with the ZX, MX, CMX, PZX, PMX, PMX4, R9, PR8-DL, UX2, FX70, FX71, FX80, and FX81 ranges, as well as the BT1 gauge. It is not listed for the BT2.
When should I choose the high temperature couplant (V-000-0002) instead of the standard gel?
V-000-0002 is supplied in a 60ml bottle and is listed as compatible with the ZX, MX, CMX, PMX4, R9, PR8-DL, and UX2 ranges. Choose it where the standard gel does not cover your application.
What sizes is the standard Dakota couplant available in?
The standard ultrasonic couplant is available in three sizes: 120ml bottle (V-000-0001), 360ml bottle (V-000-0003), and a 4.5L container (V-000-0004). A 120ml low viscosity variant (V-000-0005) is also offered for specific gauges.
What is the underwater gasket lubricant (V-000-0007) and which gauge requires it?
V-000-0007 is a 6g underwater gasket lubricant listed solely for use with the PMX gauge. An O-Ring kit (A-185-0001) containing one lubricant and two gaskets is also listed for the PMX.
Is the low viscosity couplant (V-000-0005) suitable for the full range of Dakota gauges?
No. V-000-0005 is listed for the PZX, R9, and PR8-DL gauges only. It is not listed as compatible with the ZX, MX, CMX, or FX series, so check gauge compatibility before ordering.
