About this product

Elcometer Ultrasonic Couplant (part numbers from T92015701 through the T92024034 and TC-24034 ranges) is a viscous gel applied between an ultrasonic transducer and the test surface so that sound energy passes into the material instead of being lost at the air gap. Without couplant an ultrasonic thickness, flaw or precision gauge cannot get a reliable signal, so the gel is a basic consumable for any ultrasonic measurement.

Elcometer formulated the gel to be viscous enough to stay in place on both horizontal and vertical surfaces, which suits real inspection work where readings are taken on pipework, tanks and structures at any orientation. The regular couplant has a temperature range of -15 to 104 degrees C. A separate high temperature gel extends the range up to 398 degrees C for use with high temperature transducers, allowing measurement on hot plant without the couplant breaking down.

It is offered in a range of pack sizes to suit different usage levels, from a 120ml bottle (T92015701) and a pack of five, through 300ml and 500ml bottles, up to a 3.8 litre container, with the high temperature gel supplied in 60ml bottles singly or in a pack of two. The Elcometer Ultrasonic Couplant is compatible with a wide span of Elcometer ultrasonic instruments including the MTG and PTG gauges, the CG70 and CG100 series, the PG70ABDL, the FD700 flaw detectors and the BG80DL series.

Used in corrosion monitoring, material thickness checks and weld inspection across marine, refinery and general industrial work. Supplied by BAMR, South Africa's authorised Elcometer distributor.

When to use the Elcometer Ultrasonic Couplant

You need this couplant whenever an ultrasonic thickness or NDT reading needs reliable acoustic contact between the transducer and the surface, including on vertical faces where a thin liquid would simply run off. It is a viscous gel that stays put on both horizontal and vertical work, with a regular grade rated -15 to 104 degrees C and a high temperature grade for hot equipment.

    • 1
      Stays put on vertical surfaces
The gel is viscous enough to hold on vertical and overhead steel, so readings on pipe walls, tank shells and structural members stay coupled instead of draining off the probe before you take the reading.
    • 2
High temperature grade to 398 degrees C
The high temperature gel works up to 398 degrees C with high temperature transducers, letting you measure hot process pipework and vessels that would boil off or break down the regular couplant.
    • 3
Covers ambient and warm work as standard
The regular grade runs -15 to 104 degrees C, which suits most outdoor and warm-surface inspection without paying for the specialist high temperature gel.

    Frequently asked questions

Should I choose regular or high-temperature Elcometer Couplant?

The regular couplant operates between -15 and 104°C, covering most coating inspection applications. The high-temperature variant is designed for substrates up to 398°C and requires a high temperature transducer. Select based on the temperature of the surface you're measuring.

What sizes of couplant are available?

Regular couplant comes in 120ml (single or pack of 5), 300ml, 500ml, or 3.8l bottles. High-temperature couplant is supplied in 60ml bottles (single or pack of 2). Choose your size based on measurement frequency and storage needs.

Can I use Elcometer Couplant on vertical surfaces?

Yes. The couplant is formulated as a viscous gel that adheres to both horizontal and vertical surfaces, making it suitable for measurements on any orientation.

Which Elcometer gauge models work with this couplant?

    The regular couplant is compatible with MTG, PTG, CG70BDL, CG70ABDL, CG100B, CG100BDL, CG100ABDL, CG100ABDL+, PG70ABDL, FD700+, FD700DL+, BG80DL, and BG80TDL. The high-temperature variant is compatible with all of these except BG80TDL.
