The Elcometer FD800 Bench Top Flaw Detector is an ultrasonic instrument designed for laboratory use, combining flaw detection with material thickness measurement, and is available as the FD800DL and the FD800DL+. The Elcometer FD800 Bench Top Flaw Detector locates internal defects such as cracks, voids and inclusions in welds and components and measures wall thickness, the data used to judge whether a part remains fit for service.
Ultrasound is pulsed into the test piece and the returning echoes are timed and analysed. Flaw detection modes include TRIG, DAC, AWS, TCG, Zero Crossing, Flank and Peak, with time corrected gain automatically compensating for sound attenuation through the material. Measurement modes cover Pulse Echo, temperature-compensated PE, Echo Echo ThruPaint, EEV, coating thickness and pulse echo coating thickness, with a velocity calibration range of 256 to 16,000 m/s, a resolution of 0.01mm and an accuracy of plus or minus 1% or plus or minus 0.1mm, whichever is greater. Three fully adjustable gates, automatic probe recognition, probe zero and temperature compensation streamline setup, and the Blanview QVGA TFT colour display of the Elcometer FD800 Bench Top Flaw Detector stays readable in sunlight.
The two models of the Elcometer FD800 Bench Top Flaw Detector differ in their pulser type and memory: the FD800DL uses two adjustable square wave pulsers, while the FD800DL+ uses two tone burst pulsers, adds grid batching with OBSTRUCT marking for inaccessible locations, and provides 6GB internal memory plus an external SD slot for up to 64GB, with full data logging via RS232 to ElcoMaster software. Used in NDT, weld inspection and corrosion work, the Elcometer FD800 Bench Top Flaw Detector is supplied by BAMR, South Africa's authorised Elcometer distributor.

Frequently asked questions
What is the key difference between the FD800DL and FD800DL+?
The FD800DL uses two adjustable square wave pulsers, while the FD800DL+ uses two tone burst pulsers. Both share four narrow frequency bands at 1, 2, 5 and 10MHz, and the FD800DL+ adds further narrow bands at 5MHz and 15MHz.
Can the FD800 measure both coating thickness and base material thickness?
Yes. It includes a dedicated CT (Coating) mode alongside PE and combined PECT modes, so coating and base material can both be assessed. The PE measuring range is 0.63 to 30480mm, and PECT covers 0.01 to 2.54mm or 0.63 to 30480mm depending on set up.
What is the measurement accuracy and resolution of the FD800?
Measurement accuracy is plus or minus 1% or plus or minus 0.1mm, whichever is greater, with a resolution of 0.01mm. Velocity calibration runs from 256 to 16,000 metres per second, with automatic V-path and dual path error correction.
Does the FD800 support AWS welding code inspection?
Yes. The AWS flaw detection mode provides automatic defect sizing in accordance with the AWS D1.1 structural welding code. It works alongside DAC curves of up to 8 points, with reference levels of -2, -6, -10, (-6/-12), (-6/-14) and (-2/-6/-10) dB.
How fast can the FD800 scan, and how much inspection data can it store?
In scan mode it captures 32 readings per second in thickness mode, with a B-Scan cross sectional display for real time viewing. Data logging covers 6Gb internal storage plus up to 64Gb on an external SD card, with bitmap graphic capture and sequential or grid logging.
Does the FD800 compensate for temperature effects on material measurements?
Yes. The PETP measurement mode provides temperature compensation, keeping thickness readings accurate across the instrument's minus 10 to 60 degree Celsius operating range.
