About this product

The Elcometer NDT UG20DL Underwater Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge (part number UG20DL) is a submersible material and coating thickness gauge for offshore inspection. Splash zones, jacket legs, ship hulls and subsea structures corrode where divers cannot easily reach with topside equipment, and pulling a structure for survey is impractical. The UG20DL measures remaining wall thickness in situ underwater, so metal loss can be tracked without removing the asset from service.

The Elcometer NDT UG20DL Underwater Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge is waterproof to a depth of 300 metres, equivalent to IP68, in a high strength transparent plastic housing operated by a single magnetically coupled multifunction switch. It works with dual element and single element transducers, supporting Pulse-Echo, Pulse-Echo with coating, Echo-Echo (ThruPaint) and TCG (time corrected gain) modes. The PE range is 0.63 to 500mm and the EE range is 2.54 to 102mm, with ±0.01mm accuracy, 0.01mm resolution and a velocity calibration range of 1250 to 13,995m/s. Eight pre-calibrated velocities are provided for aluminium, cast iron, iron, PVC, polyurethane, polystyrene, stainless steel and steel, plus one user-programmable setup.

Automatic probe recognition and zero simplify diving operations, and gain options run from selectable fixed levels through automatic gain control with a 100dB range and time corrected gain. The data logger stores 5,000 readings together with the A-Scan waveform, downloadable over bi-directional RS232 to the data management software for analysis on dry land. The 12.7mm 4.5 digit LCD refreshes at 25Hz with a selectable backlight. Used for offshore and marine corrosion inspection, it is supplied by BAMR, South Africa's authorised distributor.

    Frequently asked questions

What measurement modes does the UG20DL offer?

The gauge supports PE, EE (ThruPaint), and PECT measurement modes. Each mode applies to different thickness measurement scenarios on submerged materials.

What is the maximum depth rating for the UG20DL?

The gauge is waterproof to a maximum depth of 300 metres, equivalent to IP68 rating.

What measurement accuracy and range does it deliver?

Accuracy is ±0.01 mm with 0.01 mm resolution. The PE measurement range spans 0.63 to 500 mm.

How does the gauge store and transfer inspection data?

The UG20DL logs up to 5,000 readings with A-scan images and gauge settings per batch. Data transfers to a PC via bi-directional RS232 interface.

What battery life should I expect in the field?

Approximately 50 hours on standard operation, or 15 hours with backlight enabled. The gauge uses three AA alkaline batteries with an automatic save mode.

    What transducer options are supported?

Both dual and single element transducers are supported. Dual transducers are automatically recognised; single element probes are manually selectable from a list. Frequencies range from 1 to 10 MHz.
