About this product

Dakota Shear Wave Standard Transducers are large single element ultrasonic transducers used with angle beam wedges for flaw detection in welds and components. Surface-breaking and internal flaws such as cracks and lack of fusion do not always lie perpendicular to a straight beam, so a shear wave introduced at an angle reaches defects a compression wave would miss. Fixing the Dakota Shear Wave Standard Transducers to wedges of different angles produces shear wave velocity measurements, and used with the Trigonometry feature of the gauge, the Dakota Shear Wave Standard Transducer locates and sizes those flaws.

The range for the Dakota Shear Wave Standard Transducers covers three frequencies, 1.00 MHz, 2.25 MHz and 5.00 MHz, in probe diameters of 1/2 x 1/2 inch, 1/2 x 1 inch, 5/8 x 5/8 inch, 5/8 x 3/4 inch and 3/4 x 3/4 inch. The 1.00 MHz units (for example PSS50501B and PSS50101B) use a composite element with S damping, while the 2.25 MHz and 5.00 MHz units use a standard element with HG damping (SSG part numbers) or R damping (SSR part numbers). Each Dakota Shear Wave Standard Transducer is available with a Microdot or BNC connector and is suitable for use with the FX70, FX71, FX80 and FX81 gauges.

The Dakota Shear Wave Standard Transducers are used in non-destructive testing across welding, fabrication, corrosion and structural integrity inspection. Couplant, transducer cables and ElcoMaster software for reporting are available as accessories for the Dakota Shear Wave Standard Transducers. They are supplied by BAMR, South Africa's authorised Dakota distributor.

Large single element transducers designed for use with angle beam wedges for a powerful flaw detection solution. Shear Wave Standard Transducers can be fixed to wedges of different angles to produce shear wave velocity measurements. When used in conjunction with the 'Trigonometry' feature of the gauge, the transducer will produce instrumental flaw detection sound shear waves.

    Frequently asked questions

What frequencies do the Dakota Shear Wave Standard Transducers come in?

Three options: 1.00 MHz, 2.25 MHz, and 5.00 MHz. Higher frequency transducers provide finer resolution; lower frequency transducers penetrate deeper. Select based on the material thickness and minimum flaw size you need to detect.

Are these transducers compatible with my Dakota gauge?

Yes, if you own an FX70, FX71, FX80, or FX81. Transducers are supplied with either BNC or Microdot connectors, so confirm your gauge's connector type when ordering.

How many probe sizes are available?

    Five: 1/2 x 1/2", 1/2 x 1", 5/8 x 5/8", 5/8 x 3/4", and 3/4 x 3/4". Smaller sizes fit confined spaces; larger sizes cover more area.

Do I need to buy angle beam wedges separately?

Yes. These transducers are designed to mount on angle beam wedges, which are sourced separately. The wedges enable you to vary the inspection angle and, with the gauge's Trigonometry feature, measure shear wave velocity and detect flaws.

Which connector should I order, BNC or Microdot?

Check your Dakota gauge's connector type and existing cable setup. The transducers come in either BNC or Microdot to match, avoiding the need for adapters.

    Is ultrasonic couplant included?

No. Couplant is sold separately in standard (120ml, 360ml, 4.5L) and high-temperature formulations. It is essential for acoustic coupling between the transducer and test surface.
