About this product

The Elcometer Whip Check Safety Cable (MT29156 / MT29157) is a tethering cable fitted across hose coupling connections to restrain a hose if a coupling fails or separates under pressure. On an abrasive blasting set-up, a coupling that lets go at high pressure causes the hose to thrash around uncontrolled, which can cause serious injury to the blaster and anyone nearby. The whip check restricts that movement, giving the operator time to shut down the air supply quickly and safely.

The Elcometer Whip Check Safety Cable is manufactured from high strength, corrosion resistant steel. To work effectively, a Whip Check Safety Cable should be fitted at every connection point: between two hose couplings, between hose and pot couplings, between hose and compressor couplings, and between hose and air distribution manifold couplings.

Two sizes of the Elcometer Whip Check Safety Cable are available. The long 970mm universal version (MT29156) suits hose with a 38mm internal diameter and 56mm outside diameter, fitting BH38 and BH38X blast hoses. The short 530mm universal version (MT29157) suits hose with a 13mm to 32mm internal diameter and 28mm to 48mm outside diameter, fitting BH13, BH19, BH25, BH32 and BH32X blast hoses. Used by blasting and surface preparation crews in shipyards, refineries and construction. Supplied by BAMR, South Africa's authorised Elcometer distributor.

Decision guide

When to use the Whip Check Safety Cable

You are running blast hose under high pressure and need to secure the coupling connections against accidental separation. The decision is how to protect the operator from a hose thrashing loose if a coupling fails or disconnects.

  • 1
    Contains coupling separation
If a coupling fails or disconnects, the cable restricts movement and holds the connection, reducing the risk of a high-pressure hose thrashing uncontrolled.
  • 2
Lets the operator shut down safely
By restricting hose movement after a failure, it gives the operator time to shut off the air supply quickly and safely rather than chasing a loose line.
  • 3
    Use at every connection point
It should be fitted between hose couplings, hose and pot, hose and compressor, and hose and manifold, so every join in the air line is protected.
  • 4
    Corrosion resistant steel
High strength corrosion resistant steel construction means the cable holds up in the harsh, abrasive conditions of blasting work.

Frequently asked questions

Which whip check variant fits my blast hose?

The Long variant (970mm) fits Blast Hoses BH38 and BH38X. The Short variant (530mm) fits BH13, BH19, BH25, BH32 and BH32X. Match your hose model against this list to select the correct cable.

What happens if a coupling fails under pressure?

A failed coupling on a pressurised hose can separate suddenly. The Elcometer Whip Check Safety Cable is designed to contain the coupling connection in this event, giving the operator extra protection.

Why is the cable made from corrosion resistant steel?

The cable is manufactured from high strength corrosion resistant steel so it can withstand the forces involved in containing a coupling failure while standing up to the working environment around blast hoses.

Does the Short variant cover more than one hose size?

Yes. The Short variant (530mm) covers Blast Hoses BH13, BH19, BH25, BH32 and BH32X, with an internal diameter of 13mm to 32mm and an outside diameter of 28mm to 48mm.

What are the dimensions of the Long variant?

The Long variant is 970mm long, with an internal diameter of 38mm and an outside diameter of 56mm, matching Blast Hoses BH38 and BH38X.

When should I fit a whip check to a blast hose coupling?

Fit one wherever operator safety around a pressurised coupling matters. It contains the coupling connection in case of accidental separation, protecting the operator from the hose whip effect.
