The Elcometer P120 Rebar Plus Concrete Rebar Locator (part number W120155I) is a steel rebar locating instrument that determines the location, orientation and depth of reinforcing bars in concrete. Before coring or drilling, operators need to find safe spots that avoid cutting through embedded steel, since hitting rebar damages the structure and the tool and can compromise the reinforcement. The P120 identifies where the bars run and gives an indication of the concrete cover depth, so holes can be placed with confidence.

In use, a loud audio tone and a clear analogue meter allow fast, accurate scanning without the need to keep re-zeroing the instrument. The high-resolution search head concentrates its strongest signal at the centre, so readings stay accurate even at close bar centres or near other metal such as scaffolding and metal window frames. To establish orientation, the search coil is rotated until the maximum and minimum signals are found: the maximum signal indicates the bar runs parallel to the coil's handle, the minimum signal that it runs at 90 degrees. A headphone socket aids detection in noisy environments.

Detection depth depends on bar diameter: an 8mm bar is found to 120mm, a 16mm bar to 140mm and a 32mm bar to 160mm. The instrument is supplied with a 100mm directional search coil and accepts a 150mm extra-depth coil and a borehole probe for greater depths. This model is discontinued; the Elcometer P120 was supplied by BAMR, South Africa's authorised Elcometer distributor.
