Concrete Cover Meters: How to Locate Rebar and Check Cover Depth
Cover depth is what protects reinforcing steel from corrosion. A concrete cover meter lets you find the bars and measure that cover without breaking out the concrete. Here is how the measurement works and how to pick the right instrument.
Concrete cover meters: locating rebar and checking cover
In reinforced concrete, the depth of concrete over the reinforcing steel, the cover, is what keeps the bars from corroding. Too little cover and chlorides or carbonation reach the steel sooner, the bars rust, and the concrete spalls. A concrete cover meter lets you locate the reinforcement and measure the cover from the surface, without coring or breaking out the structure.
What the instrument does
A cover meter uses an electromagnetic probe to detect the steel below the surface. As you move the probe, it tells you where a bar runs and how deep it sits. Used well, it gives you three things: the position of the reinforcement, an estimate of bar diameter, and the cover depth over each bar.
Why cover matters
Design codes set a minimum cover for a reason. It is the sacrificial barrier that delays corrosion for the design life of the structure. On a new pour, a cover survey confirms the steel was placed and the cover achieved before anyone signs off. On an existing structure, it helps explain cracking or spalling and feeds a durability assessment.
How the measurement works
The probe sets up an electromagnetic field that interacts with the steel below. The strength of that interaction depends on how close and how large the bar is. The meter converts the signal to a cover reading. Because diameter and cover both affect the signal, you get the most accurate cover when you tell the meter the bar diameter, or let it estimate diameter where the standard allows.
Choosing the right instrument
- Basic locator and cover check: for spot checks and smaller jobs, a straightforward cover meter that locates bars and reads cover is enough.
- Survey instrument: for larger structures and formal condition assessment, a survey-grade meter that logs readings, maps the reinforcement and exports data saves a great deal of time and produces the records an engineer expects.
Match the instrument to the job. A site engineer doing occasional checks does not need a full survey system; a specialist running condition surveys across a bridge deck does.
Getting reliable readings
- Tell the meter the expected bar diameter where you can, for the most accurate cover.
- Watch for closely spaced or layered bars, which can confuse a reading; move along the bar and take several measurements.
- Record cover against the specified minimum so the result is defensible.
