About this product

The Elcometer 211 Magnetic Coating Thickness Gauge (part numbers A211F-1M and A211F-8M), widely known as the "Banana" or Inspection Gauge, is a mechanical pull-off gauge that measures the dry film thickness of non-magnetic coatings over steel. It solves a specific problem: measuring coating thickness where electronic instruments cannot safely or practically be used, such as inflammable atmospheres in oil and gas production and underwater dry film inspection. With no battery or electronics, it works reliably on cold surfaces and in conditions that would defeat a digital gauge.

The Elcometer 211 Magnetic Coating Thickness Gauge uses a permanent magnet balanced against a calibrated spring. As the gauge is rotated, the magnet lifts off the coated surface at a point set by the coating thickness, which is read directly from the scale. It is factory calibrated, with user calibration adjustment, and supplied with foils to check calibration on site. Accuracy is plus or minus 5 percent of the reading or plus or minus 2.5 micrometres, whichever is greater. The metric version (A211F-1M) reads 0 to 1000 micrometres and the imperial-range version (A211F-8M) reads 0.65 to 6mm. A V-grooved base seats it on curved work, which suits pipeline inspection. Substrate thickness must be at least 0.4mm and readings kept at least 6mm from an edge.

The Elcometer 211 can be used in accordance with ISO 2178, ISO 2808, ASTM B 499, SSPC-PA2 and others. Used in coatings inspection, marine and pipeline work, it is supplied by BAMR, South Africa's authorised Elcometer distributor.

When to use the Elcometer 211 Banana Gauge

Sometimes you need dry film coating thickness on steel where an electronic gauge cannot safely or practically go, such as inflammable atmospheres in oil and gas production or underwater inspection. The Elcometer 211 is a mechanical magnetic-pull gauge that reads coatings up to 6mm with no battery to fail.

  • 1
No electronics to restrict where it goes
Being purely mechanical and magnetic, it can be used in inflammable atmospheres in oil and gas production where electronic instruments are difficult or unsafe.
  • 2
Reads underwater and on cold steel
It is suited to cold surfaces and underwater dry film thickness inspection, so field crews and divers get a reading where a digital gauge would struggle.
  • 3
    Shaped for pipework
The V-grooved base seats on curved surfaces, making it practical for pipeline inspection rather than flat plate only.
  • 4
    Verifiable on site
It is factory calibrated with user adjustment and ships with foils to check calibration in the field, so the reading can be confirmed wherever the job is.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the Elcometer 211 used in oil and gas or offshore environments?

The 211 is a mechanical gauge, making it suitable for use in inflammable atmospheres where electronic instruments cannot safely be used. It also performs well for underwater dry film coating thickness inspection.

What measurement ranges does the 211 offer?

Part number A211F-1M measures 0 to 1,000 micrometres. A211F-8M covers the heavier coating range of 0.65 to 6mm. Accuracy for both is plus or minus 5% of reading or plus or minus 2.5 micrometres, whichever is greater.

What are the substrate and geometry requirements for a valid reading?

The substrate must be at least 0.4mm thick. The measurement area must have a minimum diameter of 30mm, the measurement point itself needs a minimum diameter of 20mm, and the probe must be at least 6mm from any edge.
