The Elcometer 141 Paint Inspection Gauge, or P.I.G. (A141, D), is a destructive dry film thickness gauge that determines the paint thickness of both single and multiple layer coatings. It works on metallic and non-metallic substrates such as wood, glass and plastics. Knowing the thickness of each layer in a multi-coat system confirms that a coating has been applied to specification, which governs both its protective performance and its appearance.
The Elcometer 141 Paint Inspection Gauge (PIG) cuts a small precise groove through the coating, and the layers are then viewed and measured through the integral x50 magnification microscope against a graticule, allowing the thickness of individual coats to be read. A large easy-grip handle makes cutting thick or hard coatings straightforward, and an internal compartment stores the cutters. The scale range reaches a maximum of 0 to 1.8mm at a resolution of 0.02mm. Fitted to its handle the gauge measures 160 by 100 by 35mm and weighs 510g. Different tungsten carbide cutters, with cutting angles such as 45 degrees, 26.6 degrees and 5.7 degrees, suit different thickness ranges from 2 to 2000 micrometres.
It can be used in accordance with AS 1580.108.2, ASTM D 4138-A, BS 3900-C5-5B, DIN 50986, ISO 2808-5B, ISO 2808-6B, JIS K 5600-1-7 and NF T 30-123, the recognised methods for destructive coating thickness measurement. Note that this gauge is discontinued. Used by coatings inspectors across industrial and protective coatings, it is supplied by BAMR, South Africa's authorised Elcometer distributor.
