The Elcometer 155 Uncured Powder Comb is a hand gauge that measures the film thickness of powder coating before it is cured.
Once a powder coating has cured, an over- or under-applied film cannot be corrected without stripping and recoating, which wastes material and time. Measuring the uncured powder thickness lets the application system be set up and fine tuned before the part enters the oven, reducing scrap and over-spray. The Elcometer 155 Uncured Powder Comb has pointed teeth that allow the powder to flow around them; placed into the powder and slid along the surface, it leaves drag marks, and the uncured film thickness lies between the highest tooth that produces a drag mark and the lowest that does not. The thickness before cure is not identical to the cured value but correlates with it, so the Elcometer 155 Uncured Powder Comb is used as a guide.
The Elcometer 155 Uncured Powder Comb is offered in two metric ranges, 50 to 255 micrometres and 225 to 1250 micrometres, and as a two-comb set covering 50 to 225 and 225 to 1250 micrometres. Accuracy is plus or minus 5 micrometres, each comb measures 38 x 46mm and weighs 18g, with a calibration certificate available as an option for the Elcometer 155 Uncured Powder Comb.
The Elcometer 155 Uncured Powder Comb conforms to ASTM D7378-A, the standard practice for measuring powder coating thickness on a substrate. It is used by powder coating applicators and quality control teams. Supplied by BAMR, South Africa's authorised distributor.
Elcometer 155 Uncured Powder Comb
The Elcometer 155 Uncured Powder Film Comb is designed to measure uncured powder coating film thickness. This enables the application system to be set up and fine tuned prior to the curing process. In turn, this will reduce the amount of scrap and over-spray.
- Measure uncured powder coating film thickness Enables the application system to be set up and fine tuned prior to the curing process
- Reduction of scrap and over-spray
- Pointed measurement teeth Allow the powder to flow around them when the comb is placed into the powder and slid along the surface
- Suitable as a guide only The thickness of a coating prior to cure is not the same value after curing but there is a correlation

Test Method
Test Method
Elcometer 155 Uncured Powder Comb - Test Method The use of powder to coat a product has, up until now, one drawback - the ability to measure the uncured powder thickness . With a wet film comb, the comb is placed perpendicular to the coating and removed, and the thickness read.
With a powder, this technique cannot be used as the powder would simply be crushed thereby making the test meaningless as it is necessary to have the two end teeth touching the substrate. To this end, the Elcometer 155 Uncured Powder Comb , is placed perpendicular to the coating and drawn across the surface - thereby generating lines in the powder where the comb teeth touch it.
The uncured powder film thickness lies between the biggest value tooth generating a line in the powder and the smallest value tooth which has not generated a line in the powder.

Frequently asked questions
When should I use the Elcometer 155 Uncured Powder Comb?
Use it to measure uncured powder coating film thickness. This enables you to set up and fine-tune your application system before curing, reducing scrap and over-spray.
Which Elcometer 155 range do I need?
Choose the 50-255µm (B15513573-5) or 225-1250µm (B15513573-6) depending on your expected film thickness. The metric set (B15513573-10) includes both 50-225µm and 225-1250µm ranges.
What is the Elcometer 155's measurement accuracy?
The comb is accurate to ±5µm across all measurement ranges.
Will the Elcometer 155 work on cured powder coatings?
No. The comb is designed specifically to measure uncured powder coating film.
Should I buy a single range comb or the metric set?
Buy the metric set (B15513573-10) if you work with varying film thicknesses. It includes both the 50-225µm and 225-1250µm ranges.
