The Elcometer 3230-1 Coil Coating Wet Film Wheels measure the wet film thickness of a coating during the coil coating process. They work on the same principle as the standard Elcometer 3230 Wet Film Wheel, but the outer wheels are knurled to allow measurements on slippery coatings or on fast moving substrates.
Measuring the film while it is still wet lets an applicator catch an out-of-specification coat immediately, before it cures, rather than reworking a dried film. The wheel has two outer wheels that rest on the substrate and an eccentric central wheel of smaller diameter. Rolling the gauge through the wet coating brings the central wheel into contact with the film, and the point on the scale where this happens indicates the thickness. When the volume to solids ratio of the coating is known, generally from the manufacturer's product data sheet, the wet film thickness can be used to predict the dry film thickness.
Two ranges are offered: part number K0003230M017 reads 0 to 50 microns in 2.5 micron graduations, and K0003230M018 reads 0 to 100 microns in 5.0 micron graduations, both to nominal values. Each wheel measures 50 x 30mm and weighs 220g, and is supplied with a storage case and operating instructions.
The Elcometer 3230-1 can be used in accordance with ASTM D 1212-A, AS/NZS 1580.107.3, BS 3900-C5-7A, ISO 2808-1B, ISO 2808-7A, JIS K 5600-1-7 and NF T30-125, the recognised wet film thickness standards. It is supplied by BAMR, South Africa's authorised Elcometer distributor.
Elcometer 3230-1 Coil Coating Wet Film Wheels
This instrument is similar to the Elcometer 3230 Wet Film Wheel, but is designed for use in the coil coating process. The outer wheels are knurled to allow measurements to be taken on slippery coatings or on fast moving substrates.
- Knurled outer wheels Allow measurements to be taken on slippery coatings or on fast moving substrates
- Eccentric central wheel design Rolls through wet coating until the centre wheel touches the film, indicating thickness on the scale
- Predicts dry film thickness When the volume to solids ratio of the coating is known, wet film thickness can be used to predict dry film thickness

Frequently asked questions
What makes the 3230-1 different from the standard Elcometer 3230?
The 3230-1 is purpose-designed for coil coating with knurled outer wheels that grip slippery coatings and allow measurements on fast-moving substrates.
Can I take measurements while the coil is running?
Yes. The knurled wheels allow you to measure on fast-moving substrates, so you can check wet film thickness in-line without stopping production.
Which part number should I order for my coating range?
Order K0003230M017 (0-50µm range, 2.5µm graduations) for thinner coatings or K0003230M018 (0-100µm range, 5.0µm graduations) if you typically apply heavier film weights.
How does knurling prevent slippage on slippery coatings?
The knurled outer wheels provide grip on slippery surfaces, preventing the wheel from skating and ensuring consistent, reliable wet film thickness measurements.
