The Elcometer 3230 Wet Film Wheel is a precision instrument that measures the wet film thickness of a coating using a set of three wheels, where the smaller central wheel is eccentric relative to the two outer wheels.
Checking a coating while it is still wet lets an applicator confirm the correct thickness has been applied before it dries, when it can still be corrected. Rolling the Elcometer 3230 Wet Film Wheel through the wet coating brings the central wheel into contact with the film, and the point on the scale where this happens indicates the thickness. The continuous scale gives a measurement accuracy of plus or minus 5% of the marked value or 3 microns, whichever is the greater. When the volume to solids ratio of the coating is known, generally from the manufacturer's product data sheet, the wet film thickness can be used to predict the dry film thickness. The Elcometer 3230 Wet Film Wheel suits both flat and curved surfaces.
Several measurement ranges are available for the Elcometer 3230 Wet Film Wheel between 0 to 25 microns and 0 to 1000 microns, each with its own part number and graduations: for example 0 to 25 microns in 1.25 micron steps (K0003230M001), 0 to 100 microns in 5.0 micron steps (K0003230M003) and 0 to 1000 microns in 50.0 micron steps (K0003230M010), among the intermediate ranges. Each Elcometer 3230 Wet Film Wheel measures 50 x 30mm and weighs 220g, and a mounting handle is available in 15cm and 50cm lengths, ordered separately.
The Elcometer 3230 can be used in accordance with ASTM D 1212-A, AS/NZS 1580.107.3, BS 3900-C5-7A, ISO 2808-1B, ISO 2808-7A, JIS K 5600-1-7 and NF T30-125, the recognised wet film thickness standards. It is supplied by BAMR, South Africa's authorised Elcometer distributor.

- Suitable for flat and curved surfaces
- Predicts dry film thickness When the volume to solids ratio of the coating is known, the wet film thickness can be used to predict the dry film thickness
- Convenient mounting handles Available in two lengths: 15cm and 50cm (order separately)
When to use the Elcometer 3230 Wet Film Wheel
Use the Elcometer 3230 to check wet film thickness as a coating is applied, on flat or curved surfaces. The smaller eccentric centre wheel touches the film as you roll the wheel through it, and the point on the continuous scale where contact is made gives the thickness.
- 1Continuous scale, not fixed stepsThe continuous scale reads to within 5 percent of the marked value rather than stepping between fixed comb teeth, so you record the actual thickness instead of the nearest band.
- 2Ranges from 25 up to 1000 micronsRanges between 0-25 and 0-1000 microns let you match the wheel to thin or heavy films, with graduations that get finer on the lower ranges, instead of stretching one scale across everything.
- 3Works on flat and curved workThe three-wheel design rolls cleanly on curved surfaces as well as flat panels, so you can check pipe and vessel coatings, not just sheet.
- 4Predicts dry film thicknessWith the coating's volume to solids ratio known, the wet reading lets you predict the dry film thickness on the spot, before the coat has cured.

Test Method
Test Method
Test Method ISO 2808-7B, BS 3900-C5 method 7B, ASTM D4414-A specify that the wet film wheel should be perpendicular to the substrate and the thickness of the coating should be stated as that indicated on the central wheel - ensuring that the wheel has been rolled from maximum thickness to minimum thickness - thus avoiding surface tension. The procedure outlined below is for guidance only. Consult the relevant Standard for full details of the applicable test procedure.
1. Using a finger and thumb, hold the wheel by its central spindle with the maximum reading on the scale nearest to the paint film.
2. Place the wheel into the wet film ensuring that the wheel is perpendicular to the film.
3. Roll the wheel across the film through 360°/180° (depending upon standard) and then remove from the surface.
4. Locate the first point on the central wheel where the paint has adhered. Read the wet film thickness from the scale on the side of the wheel at this point. Repeat the procedure at least twice in different places to obtain representative results. To use the wheel on pipes, roll the wheel at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the pipe. On rough surfaces, measurements will be made from the surface peaks and therefore will represent the minimum wet film thickness.

Frequently asked questions
How does the Elcometer 3230 wet film wheel work?
The 3230 consists of three wheels. The central wheel is smaller in diameter and eccentric relative to the two outer wheels.
What range and accuracy does the 3230 provide?
Eleven variants are available from 0 to 25 micrometres up to 0 to 1,000 micrometres. Accuracy is plus or minus 5% of the marked value or 3 micrometres, whichever is greater. All variants are available with an optional calibration certificate.
How fine are the graduation increments on the smaller-range wheels?
The 0 to 25 micrometre wheel (K0003230M001) has graduations of 1.25 micrometres. The 0 to 40 micrometre wheel uses 2.0 micrometre increments. Graduations become coarser as range increases, reaching 50 micrometres on the 0 to 1,000 micrometre model.
