The Elcometer 138 Bresle Kits (E138-1C / E138-1) measure the level of soluble salts on a surface using the Bresle method, combining the Elcometer 138 Conductivity Meter with Elcometer 135 Bresle Patches. Measuring contaminants before a coating is applied is essential: if a coating goes onto a contaminated surface that has not been properly prepared, it can fail prematurely, leading to costly re-coating and high maintenance.
The method attaches a Bresle patch to the prepared surface, injects a measured volume of pure water and pumps it back and forth to dissolve soluble salts, then measures the conductivity of the water before and after to determine surface salt density. The Elcometer 138 Conductivity Meter is lightweight and portable, accurately measures the salinity of test samples, and displays conductivity in S/cm, S/m, ppm and percent salinity. Its cartridge-type sensor can be easily replaced when necessary. The measuring range of the Elcometer 138 Bresle Kits is 2 percent of full scale plus or minus 1 digit, rising to 3 percent of full scale plus or minus 1 digit at depths greater than 10 millisiemens per centimetre. The two kit options of the Elcometer 138 Bresle Kits differ only in the patches supplied: E138-1C uses Elcometer 135C Bresle Test Patches and E138-1 uses Elcometer 135B Bresle Patches. Each kit provides 25 tests, measures 300 by 220 by 75mm and weighs 2.1kg.
The Elcometer 138 Bresle Kits can be used in accordance with ISO 8502-6, ISO 8502-9, AS 3894.6-A, IMO MSC.215 (82), IMO MSC.244 (83), SSPC Guide 15, US Navy NSI 009-32 and US Navy PPI 63101-000, the recognised standards for soluble salt assessment. Used by coatings inspectors in marine, naval and corrosion-protection work, the Elcometer 138 Bresle Kits are supplied by BAMR, South Africa's authorised Elcometer distributor.
Elcometer 138 Bresle Kits & Elcometer 135 Bresle Patches
It is essential that the level of contaminants on a surface is measured prior to application of the coating to ensure the quality of the coating and that its optimum lifetime is achieved. The Elcometer 138 Bresle Kit includes the Elcometer 138 Conductivity Meter, a lightweight, portable conductivity meter that accurately measures the salinity of test samples.
- Lightweight, portable conductivity meter Accurately measures the salinity of test samples
- Cartridge type sensor Can be easily replaced when necessary
- Multiple display units Displays conductivity in S/cm, S/m, ppm and % salinity
When to use the Elcometer 138 Bresle Kits
Reach for this kit when you need to measure soluble salt on a surface by the Bresle method before coating, and want the test patches and conductivity meter supplied together. Salt left on a surface shortens coating life, so it is checked during surface preparation on marine and heavy industrial work. The kit includes the Elcometer 138 conductivity meter, which reads the salinity of the test sample.
- 1Complete Bresle method in one kitIt supplies the Elcometer 135 Bresle test patches with the 138 conductivity meter and enough material for 25 tests, so you can run the surface salt check from the box without sourcing parts separately.
- 2Reports in the unit the spec asks forThe meter displays conductivity in S/cm, S/m, ppm and percent salinity, so you can report directly in the unit a given specification calls for rather than converting by hand.
- 3Matches the standards for marine and industrial workIt conforms to ISO 8502-6, ISO 8502-9, AS 3894.6-A, IMO MSC.215 and MSC.244, SSPC Guide 15 and US Navy NSI 009-32, which are the standards typically cited on ship and heavy industrial coating contracts.

Test Method
The surface density of soluble salts can be tested by using the Elcometer 135B Bresle Patch together with a conductivity meter, test strips which change colour or titration tubes. Outlined below is the procedure for testing the surface with the Elcometer 135B and a conductivity meter.
Please note that this is intended as a guide only. The relevant ISO standard should be referred to for precise instructions.
Remove the protective paper and the square in the centre of the patch. Attach the Elcometer 135B Bresle Patch to a dry and clean test surface.
Measure a given amount of distilled water into a measuring tube or beaker, clean the syringe using this water. Using a conductivity meter, measure the electrical conductivity of the distilled water in the measuring tube.
Using the water in the measuring tube or beaker, inject a given amount into the Bresle Patch which is adhered to the test surface. Pump the water back and forth between the syringe and the patch, to dissolve the soluble salts on the test surface.
Remove all the distilled water from the patch using the syringe and return it to the measuring tube or beaker. Re-measure the electrical conductivity of the water
