The Elcometer 138 Abrasive Soluble Salt Test Kit (E138-A-CM) tests blasting abrasives for soluble salt contamination on site, according to the ASTM D4940 method. Abrasives can carry soluble salts from their original source or from re-use of the blasting media. That contamination transfers to the blast cleaned surface, accelerating corrosion and causing premature coating failure if it is not detected and removed before the coating is applied, so checking the abrasive itself closes a route of contamination that surface testing alone can miss.

The method is straightforward: a measured volume of abrasive is mixed with an equal volume of water and agitated so any soluble salts dissolve. The slurry is left to settle, then the filtered water is tested with the supplied conductivity meter. The Elcometer 138 Conductivity Meter measures across a range of 0 to 19.99 millisiemens per centimetre with an accuracy of plus or minus 2 percent of full scale.
