About this product

The Elcometer 119 Pipe Pit Gauge (part number E119) is a pocket-sized mechanical gauge used to identify the condition of a pipe by measuring the depth of corrosion pits. For pipe coaters, corrosion pitting is the problem that decides whether pipework can be recoated or must be cut out, so a quick measurement of pit depth against wall thickness is essential before any coating work proceeds.

In use, the Elcometer 119 Pipe Pit Gauge is placed horizontally on the surface of the pipe and the indicator arm is depressed until the stylus reaches the base of the corrosion pit. The depth of the pit is then read directly on the scale marked on the body of the gauge and compared with the actual pipe wall thickness, giving an immediate assessment of how far corrosion has progressed. The gauge measures over a range of 0 to 0.5 inches, graduated in 10 mil and 1/16 inch increments. It is supplied in imperial units only.

The body also carries useful reference data printed alongside the scale, including a ruler, weight per foot, and formulae of use to the pipe coater. The gauge measures 68 x 133 x 4mm and weighs 227g, small enough to carry on site. It is used in pipe coating, corrosion assessment and coating inspection work. Supplied by BAMR, South Africa's authorised distributor.

Test Method

The Elcometer 119 Pipe Pit Gauge is placed on the edge along the pipe and the indicator arm is depressed until the stylus touches the bottom of the pit or crater. The depth of the pit is then indicated on the scale marked on the body of the gauge.

This can be compared with the nominal wall thickness of the pipe. Data printed on the body of the gauge includes a 0 - 4.5-inch ruler, weight per foot and formulae which are likely to be of use to the pipe coater.
