About this product

The Elcometer 123 Surface Profile Gauge (part number E123A-M-) measures the peak-to-valley height of a blast-cleaned surface, in a similar way to the Elcometer 224 Digital Surface Profile Gauge. The degree of surface profile decides a coating's performance: too large and the amount of coating required increases while peaks risk remaining uncoated and allowing rust spots to occur, too small and there may be insufficient key for adequate adhesion, leading to premature coating failure.

The Elcometer 123 Surface Profile Gauge presses a sprung stylus into the valleys of the blasted profile and reads the peak-to-valley height against a fixed reference, giving a direct measurement on its dial. The Elcometer 123 Surface Profile Gauge measures over a range of 0 to 1000µm with a scale graduation of 2µm. Compact at 105 x 55 x 25mm and weighing 335g, the metric version is supplied ready for field use.

The Elcometer 123 Surface Profile Gauge conforms to ASTM D 4417-B, SANS 5772, SSPC PA 17, US Navy NSI 009-32 and US Navy PPI 63101-000, the standards used to verify surface profile in surface preparation and coating inspection. It is used by coatings inspectors and blasting contractors across corrosion protection, marine and industrial finishing work. Supplied by BAMR, South Africa's authorised distributor.

Elcometer 123 Surface Profile Gauge

SKU · E123A-M

Surface Profile Gauges are used to measure the profile as adhesion, coverage and overall volume of coatings used. If the surface profile is too large the amount of coating required increases, otherwise there is a danger that the peaks remain uncoated - allowing rust spots to occur. If the surface profile is too small there may be insufficient key for adequate adhesion leading to premature coating failure.

Frequently asked questions

What does the Elcometer 123 measure?

It measures surface profile (the peaks and valleys left after blast-cleaning or abrasion). This is critical because it directly controls how much coating you need and whether it will adhere to the substrate.

Why is surface profile important in coating work?

If the profile is too large, you waste coating and may leave uncoated peaks that rust. If too small, there is insufficient mechanical key for adhesion, leading to premature failure. The gauge helps you stay in the right zone.

What range does the Elcometer 123 cover?

It measures from 0 to 1000 micrometres with a 2 micrometres scale. This covers most industrial blast-cleaned and abraded steel surfaces you will encounter.

Is the Elcometer 123 portable for on-site use?

Yes. At 335g and 105 x 55 x 25mm, it fits in a toolbag or pocket for quick profile checks directly on the job.
