The Elcometer 125 Surface Comparators (part numbers E125-1 and E125-2) are durable reference comparators for estimating the surface profile of grit or shot blasted surfaces. Confirming the blasted profile is essential before coating: too coarse and the amount of coating increases while peaks risk remaining uncoated, too fine and there is insufficient key for adhesion. The comparator gives a fast visual and tactile assessment, valuable when moving quickly from blasting to painting to avoid flash rust, and in hazardous areas where electronic equipment is prohibited.

Each comparator carries four reference profile grades formed in corrosion-resistant metal. The freshly blasted surface is compared, in turn, against each segment, and a profile grade is assigned. Profiles are recorded in microns. The Grit Surface Comparator (E125-1) provides section profiles of 25, 60, 100 and 150µm, while the Shot Surface Comparator (E125-2) provides 25, 40, 70 and 100µm, so the correct comparator matches the abrasive used.

The ISO 8503 Parts 1 and 2 standard specifies roughness in metric units only, and the Elcometer 125 is the only comparator to conform to ISO 8503 Parts 1 and 2. It also conforms to AS 3894.5, ASTM D 4417-A, IMO MSC.215(82) and SSPC PA 17.
