The Elcometer 5100 Payne Permeability Cups (part numbers K0005100M201, K0005100M202 and K0005100M203) are anodised aluminium cups used to determine the permeability of films of paints, varnishes, plastics, cellophane and similar materials. A coating's resistance to water vapour passing through it governs whether it protects or breathes as intended, so measuring permeability informs decisions on protective coatings, packaging films and breathable finishes.
In use, the film to be tested is applied with a film applicator and suitable test chart, then sealed across a cup filled with water or a dry desiccant, with a gasket fitted to ensure a tight seal. The cup is weighed, left for a set time, then re-weighed. Water either evaporates from or is absorbed into the cup, and the change in mass relative to the film thickness gives the water vapour transmission rate, indicating the degree of permeability or permeance. The cups are designed for use with the Elcometer 8720 Compact Balance, which records the weight change.
Three cup sizes are offered: the 5100/1 with a 10 cm2 area and 15 cm3 volume, the 5100/2 with a 30 cm2 area and 50 cm3 volume, and the 5100/3 with a 30 cm2 area and 75 cm3 volume. The cups can be used in accordance with ASTM D1653, ASTM E96, ISO 7783-1 and ISO 7783-2. They are supplied by BAMR, South Africa's authorised Elcometer distributor.
Elcometer 5100 Payne Permeability Cups
The Elcometer 5100 Payne Permeability Cups are made entirely from anodised aluminium and are used to determine the permeability of films of paints, varnish, plastic, cellophane, etc. For use with Elcometer 8720 Compact Balance.
- Made entirely from anodised aluminium
- Determines the permeability of films of paints, varnish, plastic, cellophane, etc.
- For use with Elcometer 8720 Compact Balance
- Water evaporates or is absorbed and weight change relative to film thickness is calculated Indicates the degree of permeability or permeance
When to use the Elcometer 5100 Payne Permeability Cups
Use the Elcometer 5100 Payne cups when you need to determine the permeability of films such as paints, varnish, plastic or cellophane. Water evaporates from or is absorbed into the cup, and the weight change relative to film thickness gives the degree of permeance. They suit labs running moisture transmission tests against ASTM E96 and ISO 7783.
- 1Measures film permeabilityThe cups determine the permeability of films of paints, varnish, plastic and cellophane, the property that governs how a coating breathes.
- 2Weight change methodWater evaporates or is absorbed and the weight change relative to film thickness is calculated, giving a direct measure of permeance.
- 3Anodised aluminium buildMade entirely from anodised aluminium, they resist the moist test conditions they are used in.
- 4Pairs with the Elcometer 8720They are made for use with the Elcometer 8720 Compact Balance, which records the weight change the method depends on.

Frequently asked questions
What does the Elcometer 5100 measure and what materials can be tested?
The 5100 Payne Permeability Cup is used to determine the permeability of films including paints, varnishes, plastics, and cellophane. The cups are made from anodised aluminium.
What sizes of Elcometer 5100 cup are available?
Three variants are available: the /1 cup with 10 cm2 area and 15 cm3 volume (K0005100M201), the /2 cup with 30 cm2 area and 50 cm3 volume (K0005100M202), and the /3 cup with 30 cm2 area and 75 cm3 volume (K0005100M203).
What balance is required to use the Elcometer 5100 permeability cups?
The 5100 cups are specified for use with the Elcometer 8720 Compact Balance. An accurate balance is required because permeability is determined by measuring the mass change of the cup assembly over time.
