The Elcometer 4340 Range of Motorised / Automatic Film Applicators is a bench machine for preparing reproducible sample films of paint, varnish, cosmetics, glue and similar liquids. Drawing films by hand introduces variation in speed, pressure and smoothness, and those differences change the dried film and undermine any comparison between samples; a motorised applicator removes that human error so films of a defined thickness are produced the same way every time.
The Elcometer 4340 Range of Motorised / Automatic Film Applicator draws an Elcometer film applicator or spiral bar coater across a precision-engineered flat aluminium table that is five times flatter than glass, giving better repeatability. The heavy base unit minimises vibration, avoiding the vibration ridges that spoil samples. Up to three film applicators can be used and up to two test charts tested at once, with 11 pre-set transverse speeds from 0.2 to 3.9 inches per second. The base is offered with a standard flat table or with perforated and channelled vacuum tables, and electrically heated tables ranging from ambient to 200 degrees C are available for temperature control (part numbers include K4340M10-, M12-, M100, M102 and M120). The machine measures 780 x 490 x 320 mm and weighs 29 kg, and its sturdy design is rated for up to 15 years of standard use.
It can be used in accordance with ASTM D 823 Method C, the standard practice for producing films of uniform thickness. A combined film applicator and spiral bar coater attachment is supplied as standard, with an optional calibration certificate. Used in paint and coatings laboratories, product development and quality control, it is supplied by BAMR, South Africa's authorised Elcometer distributor.
