The Elcometer 4695 Grey Scale Charts (part numbers K0004695M053, K0004695M043 and K0004695M243) are sealed paint test charts carrying six stripes on a white field, ranging in shade from very light grey to black, used to rate the hiding power of applied coatings.

Hiding power decides whether a coating obscures the surface beneath it at its specified film thickness or spread rate, which affects how many coats are needed and whether the finish looks even. The six stripes of the Elcometer 4695 Grey Scale Charts are numbered 1 to 6 and represent uniform steps of increasing contrast. The hiding power of an applied coating is rated as the number of the darkest stripe that is completely, or almost completely, obscured at a specified thickness or spread rate, giving a simple numerical result that can be compared between samples.

Two forms of the Elcometer 4695 Grey Scale Charts are available to suit the application method. Form CU-1 (Leneta Chart CU-1, 610 x 946 mm, 22.68 kg per box, 100 charts per box, 1 box per case) is used for more practical large-area brush or roller applications. Form 24B (Leneta Chart 24B, 194 x 289 mm, 4.08 kg per box, 250 charts per box, 4 boxes per case) is used for applications made with a drawdown blade. The Elcometer 4695 Grey Scale Charts are made from naturally bright, non-fluorescent white paper with no optical brighteners that could affect instrumental colour measurements, and can be used with the Elcometer 4340 Motorised Film Applicator.

The Elcometer 4695 Grey Scale Charts can be used in accordance with AS/NZS 1580.213.1, ASTM D344, ASTM D2805, ASTM D2486, ASTM D5150, ASTM D6441, BS 3900-D4, DIN 53162-2, FTMS 141 4121 and ISO 2814.
