About this product

The Elcometer 2310 Shell Viscosity Cups are stainless steel dip cups for quick viscosity measurements on site or during production, often used in the printing and ink industries. Viscosity affects how an ink or coating flows and applies, and a simple, portable check keeps it within specification without taking a sample back to a laboratory; getting it wrong leads to application and finish defects on press or in the field.

The method is straightforward: dip the Elcometer 2310 Shell Viscosity Cup into the product, lift it out, and time how long the contents take to drain through the orifice. The measured kinematic viscosity is expressed in seconds of flow time, which can be converted into centistokes (cSt). Six orifice sizes cover different viscosity ranges of the Elcometer 2310 Shell Viscosity Cups. Cup 1 (1.8mm orifice, part K0002310M001) reads 2 to 20 cSt; cup 2 (2.4mm) reads 10 to 50 cSt; cup 3 (3.1mm) reads 30 to 120 cSt; cup 4 (3.8mm) reads 70 to 270 cSt; cup 5 (4.6mm) reads 125 to 520 cSt; and cup 6 (5.8mm) reads 320 to 1300 cSt, so the right cup is chosen for the product being tested. Each Elcometer 2310 Shell Viscosity Cup is also available with a calibration certificate (the C-suffixed part numbers) carrying an efflux time certificate for traceability.

The Elcometer 2310 Shell Viscosity Cups can be used in accordance with ASTM D 4212, the standard for dip-cup viscosity measurement. Used in ink, paint and coating production for routine viscosity control, the Elcometer 2310 Shell Viscosity Cups are supplied by BAMR, South Africa's authorised Elcometer distributor.

Elcometer 2310 Shell Viscosity Cups

The Elcometer 2310 Shell Viscosity Dip Cups are stainless steel cups for quick measurements on-site or during production. These cups are often used in the printing or ink industry. Simply dip the cup into the product to be measured, lift it out and measure how long it takes for the contents to empty through the orifice. The measured kinematic viscosity is generally expressed in seconds (s) flow time, which can be converted into Centistokes (cSt). There are six different orifice sizes available, for measurements between 2 and 1300cSt.

    Frequently asked questions

Which Elcometer 2310 cup size should I choose for my viscosity range?

Select the cup based on your product's viscosity. Cup 1 measures 2 to 20 cSt, Cup 2 covers 10 to 50 cSt, Cup 3 measures 30 to 120 cSt, Cup 4 covers 70 to 270 cSt, Cup 5 measures 125 to 520 cSt, and Cup 6 covers 320 to 1300 cSt. Each orifice diameter (1.8mm to 5.8mm) is sized for its viscosity range.

How do I measure viscosity with a shell dip cup?

Dip the cup into your product, lift it out, and time how long the contents take to empty through the orifice. The flow time in seconds converts directly to Centistokes (cSt), the standard kinematic viscosity unit.

Can I get a calibration certificate for the Elcometer 2310?

Yes. Calibration versions (part numbers ending in 'C') are available for all six cup sizes. Each Certificate of Calibration shows readings and traceability to verify accuracy for your QC records.

Are these cups suitable for on-site or production-line use?

Yes. The stainless steel construction and simple dip-and-time method are designed for quick measurements on-site or during production with no complex setup required.
