The Elcometer 4270 Sag Tester is a stainless steel applicator used to establish a coating's resistance to sag under gravity. When a wet coating is applied too thickly or has poor sag resistance, it runs and forms uneven stripes or curtains as it dries on a vertical surface, spoiling the finish; the Elcometer 4270 Sag Tester quantifies the film thickness at which this begins to happen so a formulation can be assessed and adjusted.
The straight scraper of the Elcometer 4270 Sag Tester has 11 notches of increasing clearance. The applicator is drawn down across a contrast chart to lay a series of parallel stripes of increasing thickness, and the chart is immediately set vertical with the thinnest film at the top. As the coating sags, the thicker stripes flow into one another, and the thickness at which the stripes join indicates the tendency to sag. Four models of the Elcometer 4270 Sag Tester cover different thickness ranges: the 4270/1 covers 75 to 300 microns, the 4270/2 covers 25 to 150 microns, the 4270/3 covers 350 to 1500 microns and the 4270/4 covers 100 to 600 microns (part numbers K0004270M001, M002, M203 and M204), each with defined notch depths and supplied with a certificate.
