About this product

The Dakota CX Ultrasonic Material Thickness Gauges (models CX2, CX4, CX6-DL and CX8-DL) measure material thickness and sound velocity on virtually any material across a wide range of applications. Ultrasonic gauges let inspectors check wall thickness and detect corrosion or thinning from one side of a component, without cutting into it, which matters where access is limited or the part must stay in service.

The gauges use Pulse Echo (PE), Echo Echo ThruPaint (EE) and Velocity (VM) measurement modes, with auto recognition to identify the correct probe when a transducer is changed and an integrated zero disc for accurate zeroing. The Pulse Echo range is 0.63 to 500mm and the Echo Echo ThruPaint range is 2.54 to 20.00mm, with Velocity Mode covering 1,250 to 10,000 m/s. Reading resolution is user selectable at 0.1mm or 0.01mm, and the reading rate can be set to 4, 8 or 16Hz, with the 16Hz Scan Mode suited to covering large surface areas. High and low limit indicators highlight problem areas, and up to 100,000 readings can be stored in up to 1,000 sequential batches.

The CX gauges conform to ASTM E 797, EN 14127 and EN 15317, the recognised methods for ultrasonic thickness measurement. Each weighs 210g without transducer, runs on two AA batteries for 15 hours alkaline or 28 hours lithium, and operates from -10 to 50°C. Higher models add Bluetooth output and DakMaster software support. Used in corrosion monitoring, fabrication and general material inspection, and supplied by BAMR, South Africa's authorised Dakota distributor.

When to use the Dakota CX Thickness Gauges

Reach for a CX gauge when you need straightforward material thickness and velocity readings across a wide range of materials and applications. The CX family runs from the basic CX2 to the data-logging CX8-DL, so you can match the gauge to how much recording and resolution the job demands.

  • 1
    Measure through coatings
Echo Echo ThruPaint mode reads the metal beneath a coating, so you get true wall thickness without stripping paint first.
  • 2
    Cover large areas fast
Scan Mode at up to 16Hz makes it practical to sweep a large surface and find thin spots rather than checking point by point.
  • 3
    Choose your data level
The DL models store up to 100,000 readings in up to 1,000 batches, so you can log and trace results where the work requires records.
  • 4
    Works to known standards
The range conforms to ASTM E 797, EN 14127 and EN 15317, which keeps thickness readings defensible in a quality system.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between Pulse Echo and Echo Echo ThruPaint, and which models have each?

Pulse Echo (PE) measures 0.63 to 500mm and is available on all four models, CX2 to CX8-DL. Echo Echo ThruPaint (EE) measures 2.54 to 20.00mm through an existing coating without stripping it first, and is only fitted on CX4, CX6-DL and CX8-DL; CX2 does not have EE mode.

Which Dakota CX model should we choose for high-volume production logging?

The CX8-DL stores up to 100,000 readings across 1000 batches, runs at 4, 8 or 16Hz, and has 40 definable pass/fail limits. The CX6-DL stores up to 1500 readings in a single batch. CX2 and CX4 have no data logging at all.

How does measurement accuracy compare across the CX range?

CX2 and CX4 measure to ±0.1mm or ±0.5% in Pulse Echo mode. CX6-DL and CX8-DL are tighter at ±0.05mm or ±0.5% (±0.004"/±0.5%) and also offer a higher-resolution display setting that CX2 and CX4 don't have.

Will the CX gauge hold up on a wet or dusty shop floor?

Yes. All four Dakota CX models, CX2 through CX8-DL, are rated IP64 for splash and dust resistance, and are specified to operate from -10 to 50°C.

Can we calibrate the gauge to a specific material, and is that the same on every model?

CX4, CX6-DL and CX8-DL calibrate to any of 39 preset materials, plus zero and 1-point calibration, with a factory reset option. CX6-DL and CX8-DL add 2-point and velocity (speed of sound) calibration. CX2 does not include material selection or factory reset.

How do we get readings off the gauge for our quality records?

CX4, CX6-DL and CX8-DL connect to a PC via USB for data transfer. CX6-DL and CX8-DL add Bluetooth to PC, Android and iOS devices, plus DakMaster software for review and statistics. CX2 does not have a USB data connection.
