
A Dakota Delay Line is a small part fitted to a single element ultrasonic transducer to slow the sound pulse before it enters the test piece, allowing precision measurement on thinner materials. On thin sections the return echo arrives so quickly that it overlaps the transmit pulse and cannot be measured cleanly. The Dakota Delay Line separates the two in time, which is what makes accurate thickness readings on thin material possible.
Delay lines come in two materials, acrylic and graphite, and the material being measured determines which to use. Acrylic delay lines of the A Dakota Delay Line suit measuring on steel, aluminium and titanium with the gauge in Interface-Echo or Echo-Echo mode. Graphite delay lines suit thin plastics and other similar materials with the gauge set to Plastic Mode. Used with higher frequency single element transducers, a Dakota Delay Line improves resolution and the detectability of small flaws.
The range for the A Dakota Delay Line includes acrylic cone tip delay lines in 1/8 inch and 3/16 inch, a graphite cone tip in 3/16 inch, acrylic pencil tips in 1/16 inch and 1/8 inch diameter at 0.45 inch length, acrylic delay line tips of 1/4 inch diameter in 1/2 inch and 3/8 inch lengths, and a 1/4 inch graphite tip. These parts support precision ultrasonic thickness measurement and are supplied by BAMR, South Africa's authorised distributor.
