The Elcometer 112 and 3236 Hexagonal Stainless Steel Wet Film Combs are precision-formed combs used to measure the wet film thickness of a freshly applied coating. Checking thickness while the coating is still wet lets an applicator catch an under- or over-applied film immediately, before it cures, which is the practical way to control the resulting dry film and avoid the cost and rework of a coating applied outside specification.
Each six-sided comb has teeth of stepped lengths along its edges. The Elcometer 112 & 3236 Hexagonal Stainless Steel / Wet Film Comb is placed into the wet film and removed, and the wet thickness lies between the highest reading wet tooth and the lowest reading dry tooth. Depending on the comb, there are 24 or 36 measurement steps, giving finer resolution. Three ranges are available: 20 to 370µm, 25 to 2000µm and 25 to 3000µm, with accuracy of ±5% of the marked value or 3µm, whichever is greater. The combs are stainless steel, so they are long lasting and reusable, and weigh between 10g and 22g depending on size.
They can be used in accordance with ASTM D 4414-A, AS/NZS 1580.107.3, BS 3900-C5-7B, ISO 2808-1A, ISO 2808-7B, JIS K 5600-1-7, NF T30-125, US NAVY PPI 63101-000 and US NAVY NSI 009-32. Used by painters, applicators and coatings inspectors across industrial and protective coating work, they are supplied by BAMR, South Africa's authorised Elcometer distributor.

When to use the Elcometer 112 & 3236 Wet Film Combs
Reach for these stainless steel hexagonal combs when you need to check wet film thickness immediately after application, before the coating cures, so you can correct the build while the paint is still workable. They handle high-build jobs up to 3000 microns, and the choice between 24 and 36 measurement steps lets you trade range for finer resolution.
- 1Catch build errors before cureReading wet film while the coating is still fluid means you can add or remove material on the spot, rather than discovering an out-of-spec dry film once it has hardened and is costly to fix.
- 2Reusable stainless steelPrecision-formed stainless steel survives repeated dipping and cleaning across many shifts, so the same comb stays in service rather than being treated as a consumable.
- 3Holds to recognised standardsAccuracy of plus or minus 5 percent of the marked value or 3 microns, whichever is greater, plus conformance to ASTM D 4414-A and ISO 2808, means readings stand up in an inspection report.
