About this product

The Elcometer 3120 is a range of Shore A and Shore D Durometers widely used to test the hardness of soft materials such as rubbers, elastomers and plastics.

Shore hardness is a routine quality check for these materials, confirming that a moulded or cured part is neither too soft nor too hard for its application. A round point indents the material under a fixed force spring, and the hardness is read directly from the dial in Shore Hardness Units. The Elcometer 3120 can be used hand-held or fitted to an optional stand for increased repeatability, since a stand removes operator variation in how the durometer is pressed against the sample.

The range of the Elcometer 3120 covers several variants. These include the Shore Durometer A (part numbers K0003120M001 and K0003120M015), the Shore Durometer A with Max indicator (K0003120M008) and a version with a Max indicator and 10N weight (K0003120M025), plus the Shore Durometer D (K0003120M005 and K0003120M018) and the Shore Durometer D with Max indicator (K0003120M009), with calibration certificate options listed under separate part numbers. Each Elcometer 3120 gauge measures 50 x 50 x 110mm and weighs 300g, and is supplied with a check piece.

The Elcometer 3120 can be used in accordance with ASTM D 2240, BS 7442-3.2, DIN 53505, FIAT 50411, ISO 868, ISO 7267-2, NF T51-123 and NF T 51-174, the recognised Shore durometer standards. It is supplied by BAMR, South Africa's authorised Elcometer distributor.

When to use the Elcometer 3120 Shore Durometer

Use the Elcometer 3120 to test the hardness of soft materials such as rubbers and plastics in Shore A or Shore D units. A round point indents the material under a fixed force spring and the result reads off the dial, with the option of a stand for tighter repeatability.

  • 1
Shore A and Shore D variants
Choosing the scale to suit the material means you read across the right hardness band rather than crowding results at one end of the dial.
  • 2
    Hand-held or stand-mounted
You can spot-check by hand on the bench or fit the optional stand when repeatability matters, such as for a QC release test.
  • 3
    Meets the recognised durometer standards
It conforms to ASTM D 2240, ISO 868, DIN 53505 and others, so the hardness figure satisfies specs written around Shore testing.

Frequently asked questions

What Shore hardness scales does the Elcometer 3120 measure?

The 3120 range covers both Shore A and Shore D. Shore A is used for softer materials; Shore D for harder materials. Both types are available with or without a max indicator needle, and selected models include a calibration certificate.

How does the Elcometer 3120 operate?

A round point indenter presses into the material under a fixed spring force. The resulting hardness value is read directly from the dial in Shore Hardness Units. The instrument can be used hand-held or mounted in an optional stand for improved repeatability.

What configurations are available for the Elcometer 3120?

Available variants include Shore A, Shore A with max indicator, Shore A with max indicator and 10N weight, Shore D, and Shore D with max indicator. Calibration certificate options are available for Shore A and Shore D base models.
