About this product

The SA40 Ultrasonic Wall Thickness / Material Thickness Gauge (part number SA40) is a hand-held gauge for measuring the thickness of metallic and non-metallic materials from one side, where there is no access to the opposite face. This single-sided capability matters for in-service inspection: pipes and pressure vessels can be checked for wall loss due to corrosion without cutting, dismantling or shutting equipment apart, and the data informs whether a component is still within safe limits.

The SA40 Ultrasonic Wall Thickness / Material Thickness Gauge uses a pulse echo technique with a dual probe. After a simple calibration to a known thickness or to the material's sound velocity, it gives fast, accurate readings on a backlit 4-digit LCD. The measuring range is 0.8 to 225.0 mm with 0.1 mm resolution, and the velocity range covers 500 to 9,999 m/sec, so it suits aluminium, titanium, plastics, ceramics, glass and other materials that conduct ultrasonic waves well, provided the top and bottom surfaces are parallel.

The SA40 Ultrasonic Wall Thickness / Material Thickness Gauge reads in millimetres, refreshes the display every second and auto shuts off after 5 minutes of non-use. It runs on two 1.5 V AA alkaline cells, operates from 0 to 40 degrees C and 20 to 90% RH, measures 124 x 67 x 30 mm and weighs 240 g. It is used across manufacturing, maintenance and corrosion monitoring on raw materials, component parts and assembled machinery. Supplied by BAMR, South Africa's authorised distributor of precision measurement and inspection instruments.

When to use the SA40 Thickness Gauge

You need to measure the wall thickness of a pipe, vessel or plate from one side because the back face is not accessible. The SA40 is a hand held gauge that reads through metallic and non-metallic materials with parallel surfaces, making it suited to corrosion checks in the field.

  • 1
    Single sided access
It measures from one side where you cannot reach the other, which is the usual situation on a closed pipe or tank wall.
  • 2
    Corrosion monitoring
It can monitor pipes and pressure vessels for loss of thickness due to corrosion, so you can track wall thinning on a fixed asset over time.
  • 3
    Wide material range
With a measuring range of 0.8 to 225.0 mm and a velocity range of 500 to 9,999 m per second, it handles aluminium, titanium, plastics, ceramics and glass after simple calibration.
  • 4
    Portable field use
At 240 g with a back-lit LCD and AA cells, it travels to the asset rather than the asset coming to a bench.
