The Elcometer 154 Wet Film Combs (B154-1) are ABS plastic gauges used to measure the wet film thickness of a coating immediately after it is applied.
Wet film thickness is the only practical check made while the coating is still on the surface, and getting it right is what gives the correct dry film thickness once the coating cures. Measuring it as the work proceeds lets an applicator adjust the application before a fault becomes permanent. Each comb has stepped teeth of known heights; pressed into the wet film and removed, the wet film thickness lies between the largest wetted tooth and the smallest dry tooth.
The combs carry both metric and imperial scales on the same tool, reading 50 to 800 micrometres on one side and 2 to 32 mils on the other, with 16 measurement steps per comb. They are made of ABS plastic, intended for single use so each can be kept as a record of the measurement for quality assurance or customer requirements, and are supplied in packs of 25. Accuracy is to nominal values, each comb measures 40 x 40mm, and the pack weighs 900g.
The Elcometer 154 conforms to ISO 2808-1A, ISO 2808-7B, BS 3900-C5-7B, JIS K 5600-1-7 and NF T30-125, the standards for coating thickness measurement. It is used by coatings inspectors and applicators across protective coating, marine and industrial painting. Supplied by BAMR, South Africa's authorised distributor.

5. Read the thickness value of this tooth. The wet film thickness is between this value and the thickness value of the next dry tooth. In the example shown, the wet film thickness lies between 2400µm and 2600µm To use the comb on pipes, ensure it is placed parallel to the longitudinal axis of the pipe
