The Tramex ME5 Moisture Encounter 5 (part number ME5) is a dual-depth, non-destructive moisture meter for measuring and evaluating moisture content in wood, plaster, drywall, brick and roofing. Hidden or elevated moisture behind finishes leads to decay, mould, adhesive failure and coating breakdown, so locating and mapping it without cutting into the building fabric is central to inspection, drying and restoration work.
The Tramex ME5 Moisture Encounter 5 transmits a low-frequency electronic signal into the material through electrodes in its base and measures the electrical impedance, which varies in proportion to the moisture present, displaying the result on a large analogue dial. Five sensitivity ranges cover wood and timber, shallow depth, drywall and roofing, plaster and tile, and masonry. The wood scale reads from 5 to 30%, while a 0 to 100 comparative scale serves all other materials. Dual-depth operation gives a shallow reading to around 10mm and a deep reading to around 30mm, allowing surface and core moisture to be compared and substrate influence to be eliminated. It detects moisture through paint, wallpaper, drywall, ceramic tiles, floor coverings, wood, ceiling tiles, roofing membranes and asphalt composition shingles.
A Bluetooth connection links the meter to its companion iOS and Android app for reporting, a hold function freezes the reading where the face is not visible, and a high-moisture audio warning tone can be enabled or disabled. Housed in a rugged ABS enclosure, it measures 160 x 85 x 38mm, weighs 270g and runs on two AA alkaline cells. The Tramex ME5 is supplied by BAMR, South Africa's authorised distributor.
