
The Elcometer 331 Mk2 Basic BH Model Concrete Cover Meter (part number W331BH-2) locates and orientates reinforcement bars in concrete, measures the depth of cover over the rebar, and takes half-cell measurements, all from a single gauge.
Insufficient cover over reinforcement leaves rebar exposed to moisture and chloride ingress, which leads to corrosion and concrete failure, so confirming cover depth and identifying areas at risk of corrosion is central to structural inspection. The covermeter locates rebar and determines its orientation quickly and accurately, displaying a large cover reading in millimetres or inches with a signal strength bar. The half-cell capability adds a large half-cell reading in millivolts, indicating where corrosion is most likely. Three sound modes assist location: Locate, where the tone rises as the head approaches rebar, Under Cover, which sounds only for low cover, and Maxpip, which sounds as the head passes the rebar centre.
This Basic BH model is a covermeter with half cell; search heads and half-cell probes are ordered separately. It carries a large graphics display with backlight for dark environments, a multiple language menu structure, interchangeable heads with LED and keypad, user selectable bar range sizes and numbers, adjustable beep volume and an earphone socket. The rugged case is waterproof to IP65 for on-site use in harsh conditions. This model does not include memory, data logging, statistics, autosize or orthogonal bar diameter determination, RS232 output or Covermaster software links, which are reserved for higher models in the range.
The Elcometer 331 Mk2 can be used in accordance with ACI 318, ASTM C876, BS 1881:201, BS 1881:204, BS 8110, CP 110, DGZfP:B2, DGZfP:B3, DIN 1045, EC 2, SIA 162, SIS 2006, TR60 and UNI10174, the recognised standards for cover measurement and half-cell corrosion assessment. It is used by structural and concrete inspectors, and is supplied by BAMR, South Africa's authorised Elcometer distributor.

What does the Elcometer 331 Mk2 Model BH measure that the base Model B does not?
The Model BH adds half-cell measurement capability, providing a half-cell reading in millivolts. The base Model B covers only rebar location, orientation, and depth of cover.
How is the gauge powered and how long does the battery last?
It uses a 7.4 V lithium-ion rechargeable battery pack providing up to 32 hours of continuous use, or 20 hours with the backlight on. The battery recharges in 4 hours, either inside or outside the gauge.
What is the IP rating and maximum operating temperature?
The gauge is rated IP65, meaning it is dust-tight and protected against water jets, suitable for use in harsh site environments. The maximum operating temperature is 50 degrees Celsius.
Does the Model BH include memory or data output?
No. The Model BH has no onboard memory and no RS232 or data output. Memory, statistics, and data connectivity are features of the higher SH, TH, and THD models.
Which half-cell probe types are compatible with the Model BH?
Both Cu/CuSO4 and Ag/AgCl half-cell probes and probe kits are available as accessories. Neither can be used with the base Model B.
